HomeMy WebLinkAbout1.07 Wildlife) ) 4.70(0) Wildlife The Colorado Division of Wildlife WRIS Data Checklist indicates that Parcel 5-1 and 5-2 is within the Overall Range for black bears, Brazilian free-tailed bats,
elk and mule deer. It is also within the winter range and the winter concentration area for mule deer and elk as well as the severe winter range for deer. Mule deer resident population
areas, blue heron nesting areas, Canada goose wintering area and production area, bald eagle winter range and bald eagle roosting sites lie within a mile of the property. I contacted
J.T. Romatzke, the District Wildlife Manager for the Parachute area to discuss the wildlife issues. I also sent him copies of the site plan for review and comment. In his comments, Mr.
Romatzke, recommended that several "wildlife friendly" measures be incorporated into the development plan and into the protective covenants for this subdivision. He felt it was particularly
important to maintain the two drainages that border the property as movement corridors for deer and elk. Cemetery Gulch crosses the southwest corner of the property, just north of the
existing cemetery. This drainage is heavily vegetated with pinyon and juniper and provides good cover for the wildlife. The second drainage, Studt Gulch, lies just north of the property,
near the northeast corner. This drainage is fairly shallow with limited tree cover until it crosses County Road #308 near the northeast corner of this development. As it flows past the
northern boundary of this property and crosses South Battlement Parkway, it becomes more deeply incised with increasing vegetation. Both drainages will be maintained as Open Space tracts,
with the buildings setback from the top of the slopes in order to allow the free movement of wildlife. Harassment of wildlife by domestic pets is also a concern of the Department of
Wildlife. Garfield County already restricts the number of dogs to one per household, and requires that those dogs be on a leash or confined by fences as a standard part of the subdivision
review process. Fences in back yards will be a maximum of 72 inches in order to keep the dogs confined, but open space corridors within the development will allow for the movement of
wildlife through the property. Mr. Romatzke also recommended the use of browse tolerant plants in landscape areas to prevent damage from elk and deer. Potential homeowners will be notified
of the restrictions and recommendations regarding wildlife by Plat notes that will appear on the Final Plats of the individual subdivisions when each of the residential properties is
developed.
