Colorado Dear Si/Madam: This letter is to confirm that I have reviewed the 7, 3' and 4' drops in the top of footing el vations at the above noted residence. These footings were lowered in order to bear on adequate bearing soil. 1 have determined that these additional wall heights will not require any additional steel, d that the footings and wails in these areas may be reinforced per the original sections shown on Sheet\S4. Please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions or corrrnents on this matter. Sincerely y BOYL Timothy M. Observed Oil of Excavation, Proposed Caretaker Residence, Okanela Lodge Property, 2518 County Road 137, Garfield County, Colorado Dear Mr. Endish: As requested by Rich Webb, a representative ofHepworth-Pawlak Geotecbnical, Inc, observed the excavation at the subject site on May 8 and 12, 2006 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and reconurnen.dations for the foundation design arc presented in this report. We previously observe bni 1dioe pits for design of :foundations at the site and presented our findings in a report dated October 22, 2004, Job No. 103 377. The, proposed construction is similar to that discussed in our previous report. The building has been designed to be supported on spread footings using the recommended allowable soil nearing pressure of 2,000 psf. The building site is located to the north of County Road 137 across from the recently completed barn. At the time of our May 8 site visit, the building area had been benched relatively flat. The soils exposed in the excavation consisted primarily of mea] um'dense, silty sand and gravel with cobbles and occasional boulders. Fill was exposed along the downhill side of the excavation. While on-site, we observed two shallow backhoe pits to determine the depth of the fill. The fill was about 2 to 4 feet deep over the natural sand and gravel soils along the downhill side of the proposed building. At this time, we recommended the fill be removed to hear on the natural granular soils. On May 12, the southern portion of the excavation had been deepened about 2 feet from that previously observed. lit the southwest portion of the excavation, there was up to about 2 to 3 feet depth of fill remaining below subgrade level. During our visit, we discussed removing the till and extending the fnotings down to the natural granular soils or re-establishing bearing level with *she on-site soils placed as structural fill. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the sails were slightly moist to moist. As an alternate: footing stabs ade levet can be re-established with the on-site granular soils, excluding topsoil and oversized rocks, placed in lifts and compacted to at lcasf 100% of th.e maximum standard Proctor density at a moisture.content near optimum. Pr or to the footing construction, loose disturbed soils should be compacted or removed. Cit?ger recotnmendatioits presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be observed. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and the previous limited subsurface exploration at the site. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk of foundation movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered in the excavation conditions for possible changes to recommendations contained in this .letter. Visually inspected the high strength bolting at the steel connections upper floor level. The welding & bolting inspected above appeared to be in general conformance with the drawings, and appeared to meet the quality requirements of the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code and the AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts except as noted below. 1) There was one beam that had been field spliced upper level grid C.4. The steel fabricator was going to have the steel erector replace this beam with a new one. 2) The radiused beam grid A.3 was too short to weld at the ends to the column side plates. The job site supervisor with English & Assoc. & steel erection supervisor were aware of or made aware of these discrepancies. These items will need to be reinspected when corrections are completed.
