Elevation is 61000 to 71200 feet. The average annual precipitation is 14 to
16 inches, the average annual air tenlnrature is 44 to 46 degrees F, and tfre
average frost-free period is I05 to II5 days. Ihe vegetation in areas not
cultivated is mainly girasses, rcody shrubs, ad forbs.
Iypically, the surface layer is dark grayish brom loam 10 inches
t.hick. The subsoil is dark brown clay loam 23 inclres thick. The subsoil is
dark bror.n clay loam 23 inches thick. TIe upper 12 inches of tlre urderlying
material is sandy clay loam. Ihe lower IErt to a depth of 60 inches is
stony light clay loam. The soil is rpncalcareous to a depth of 10 to 14
inches and calcar@us below that depttt.
Included in this unit are gna]I areas of Lvanston ard tJnnamed silt loam
(70) soils. Also ircIuded are gnall areas of soils similar to Assinniboine
but with obble and stone at depttrs of 20 to 40 inches. Included areas nake
up about 15 percent of the total acreage.
Permeability of the Assinnilroine soil is noderate. Available water
capacity is high. Effective rootirg depth is 60 inches or rrDre. Itrrnoff is
slow, and the hazard of water erosion is slight.
This unit is used mainly for irrigated haylard ard pasturelard. It is
also r:sed for hornesite develotrment.

The lntential

site are Utah senriceberqr, Douglas rabbitbrush, mountain snowberry, arrd
needleandthread. Ihe average annual production of air-dry vegetation is
abottt 11500 pourds per acte. If the range conditiqr deteriorates, mountain
big sagebrush, lbuglas rabbitbrush, cheatgrass, rubber rabbitbrush, and
arulual teeds increase. This unit responds well to fertilizer, to rarge
seeding, and to lrcper grazing use. br successfur seeding, Irepare a
seedbed ard drill the beed. Brush rnanagelnent improved deteriorated areas of

lntential plant conrnunity. Management practices suitabte for use on this
unit are proper range nser deferred grazing, rotation grazing, arrd aerial

This unit is r,rell suited to hay and lxsture. seedbed prelnration
should be on the contour or across the slo1n where practical. proSnr
stocking rates, Snsture rctation, and rest.ricted grazing during wet periods
help to keep the pastur.e in good orditicn and to protect the soil frcrn
ercsion. Periodic rrrneing and clipping help to nraintain uniform grow$t.
Ieveling help to insure the uniform application of water.
This unit is r+ell suited to irrigated crops. furrow, border,
mrru]ation, an"l sprinkler irrigation systens are suited to this unit. If
furrovr or corrugatlon irrigation systerns are used, runs should be on tie
@ntour or across the slope. Irrigation water needs to be applied at a rate
that insures optirnum lxoduction without increasirg deep percrolation, nrnoff ,
arxl erosion. The organic matter content can be maintained by usirg a
suitable Lotaion. Q-ops reslnnd to nitrogen and Sfrosphorus fertilizer.
