The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to you, dated October 11, 2001. The proposed residence will be a 11/2 story log structure over a walkout basement and 2 car garage. The basement and garage floors are proposed to be slab -on -grade. Foundations were designed for an assumed soil bearing pressure of 2500 psf and retaining walls were designed for an earth pressure based on an assumed equivalent fluid unit weight of 50 pcf. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in multiple levels from 11/2 to 51/2 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted mainly of brown, very stiff sandy clay with angular gravel and cobble size rock fragments. The soils exposed in the northwest corner of the excavation (including the exterior pads) consisted of whitish brown, stiff, calcareous sandy clay with gravel. Results of swell -consolidation testing performed on samples of the brown clay, shown on Fig. 1, indicate moderate to high expansion potential under conditions of Tight loading and wetting. The whitish brown clay exposed in the northwest corner has minor expansion potential based on the swell -consolidation test results shown on Fig. 2. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist to moist. The excavations for three deck footing pads near the southeast corner of the house and the wall footing in the northeast corner appeared to Bob Littler October 30, 2001 Page 2 have a few inches of topsoil in the bottom, overlying the very stiff brown clay. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil (below all topsoil) and designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 4000 psf can be used for support of the proposed residence with a risk of excessive differential movement due to the expansive conditions_ The footings should also he designed for a minimum dead load pressure of 1000 psf to help resist uplift due to the expansive subgrade. Heave of the foundation should be expected if the brown clay bearing soils become wet. The calcareous soils could settle under loading. Footings should be a minimum width of 14 inches for continuous walls and 18 inches for columns. Topsoil and loose and disturbed soils in footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils. Exterior footings should be provided with at Ieast 42 inches of soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 60 pcf for on-site soil as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain should he provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind below grade walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas should consist of imported granular soils such as road base compacted to at least 95% of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Consideration should be given to use of a structural slab above crawlspace due to the expansion potential of the clay soils. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at Ieast 10 feet of the building. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. H -P GEOTECH Bob Littler October 30, 2001 Page 3 In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required_ It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
