Defequ_e,. Colorado. r ,REI Proieet # 12-084 Our office provided a drawing for the foundation of the home at the site noted above. This morning 1 was asked if the entire length of the front of the home (approx. 50') could be cellar space instead of just the 19'-1' as shown on the plans. The 7" deep structural slab detail over the 19'-1" portion would be used for the entire 50' length of the front of the home. Our office has no issues with this change. We were also asked if a 10" wide wall (entire height of wall), with the extra 2" oriented toward the cellar space, would be an acceptable alternative to the corbel detail on the plans. Use ofa 10" wide wall instead ofthe S" wall with the corbel is an acceptable alternative, The small eccentricity caused by the 1" offset ofthe center of gravity of the wall is net enough to create any problem. The add4ed weight of the wall only increases the dead load by 238 lbs each foot, not enough to compromise the foundation. We do recommend only a partial backfill, possibly V2 height , to reduce the potential of pushing in of the wall In my opinion, as a structural engineer, extending the cellar detail and specification to the entire front of the home, and using a 10" wide wall to provide a 2" exterior brick ledge is a suitable option.
