Farrar Garfield County Planning Dept. 2014 Blake Avenue Glenwood Springs, CO 81601 Re: Davis Exemption Dear Mr. Farrar: J. A. DANIELSON State Engineer 4,x-4Qi1980 We have reviewed the material submitted for the above referenced exemption application. The developer proposes to use wells for the water supply which would intercept ground water tributary to Elk Creek and the Colorado River at a point where there is still water available for appropriation. This office can issue individual domestic well permits to individual lot purchasers and we recommend approval of the Davis Exemption. Very truly yours, Hal D. When the range condition deteriorates, forbs and woody shrubs increase. When the range is in poor condition, undesirable weeds and annual plants are numerous. Proper crazing rnanaipment maintains and improves range condition. Reduction of brush improves deteriorating range sites. Seeding is advisable if the range is in poor condition. Suitable plants for seeding are pubescent wheatgrass, western wheat - grass, and big bluegrass. For successful seeding, a good practice is to prepare a seedbed and drill the seed. This soil has potential as habitat for pheasant, cottontail rabbit, mourning dove, and squirrel. They obtain their food and shelter primarily from crops andh:ayland. This soil has few limitations for community development. Low strength, moderate shrink -swell, and frost action are factors that need to be considered in design criteria for structures and roads. Community sewage systems need to be provided if the population density increases. Capability subclass 111e; 1Ve (1ry1and. J u• `a 3) 7 ,+ • • 45C -Ascalon fine sandy loam, 1 to 6 percent slopes. This deep, well drained, nearly level to gently sloping soil is on mesas, alluvial fans, and terraces. It formed in sandstone and shale alluvium. Elevation ranges from 5,000 to 6,500 feet. The average annual precipitation is about 14 inches, the average annual air temperature is about 48 degrees F., and the average frost -free period is about 120 days. Typically, the surface layer is brown fine sandy loam about 5 inches thick. The subsoil is yellowish brown : andy clay loam or clay loam about 30 inches thick. The substratum is very pale brown sandy clay loam or fine sandy loam that extends to a depth of more than 60 inches. Included with this soil in mapping are small areas of Olney and Potts soils, both on slopes of 1 to 6 percent. Permeability of the Ascalon soil is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches. Available water capacity is moderate. Surface runoff is slow and the erosion hazard is slight. This soil is used mainly for irrigated crops, hay, and pasture- land. Some areas are used for livestock grazing and for wildlife habitat. Irritation is accomplished primarily through corrugations, although sprinklers are a good alternative method.
