Dear Mr. Halevy: As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed a waterline trench at the subject site on October 23, 2003 to evaluate the soils e.l{posed fen fomldation support. The findings of our obscrvatil~ns and recommemfa!inns l:or the lbundation design are presented in this repott. The services were performed in · · accordance with our agreement for geoteclmical engineering set:viceR to Blue River Construction Management, LLC, dated October 21, 2003. The proposed residence will consist of a 11/z stOty wood frame structure over a crawlspace. There will be a small mechanical room basement. level with a slab-on- grade floor. At the time of our visit to the site, a water line trench had been excavated into the p1:oposed building area. 'fhe soils exposed in the trench cons.isted of about 1 foot of tt\psoil overlying relatively dense, slightly silty $andy gravel with cobbk8 tn the cxca vated depth of 6 feet: The .results of a gradation analysis performed on a sample of the gravels (minus 5 inch fraction) obtained from the site are presented on Figure l. No free water was encountered in the excavation anc! the soils were slightly moist to moi~t. Considering the conditions exposed in the trench and the nature of the proposed eonstruction, spread tootin!,>S placed on the undisturbed natuml gravel soif·designed fo1· 1.tll allowable soil hearing pressure of 3,000 psf should he adequate for support of the pr.oposed residence. Footings should be a minimum width of J 6 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Loose and disturbed soils in footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undist~uhed natural gravel soils. Voids created by the removal of large rocks should be backt1Jicd with compacted sand nnd gravel or with concrete. Exterior fo()tings should he provided with adequate soil cover above the.\!· bearing elevations for froot protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by nssuming an Parker J0.3-841-7119 ~ Colomdo Springs 719-633-5562 " Silve::d-,on1t: Y70-468-1989 H-1-' GEDTECH Blue .River Construction Management, LLC October 27, 2003 Page 2 unsupported. length of at least 10 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining stmctures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on au equivalent t1uid unit weight of at least 45 pcf for on-site soil, excluding vegetation, topsoil or oversized nick, as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent. temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the basemt1ntlevel. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site soils compacted to at least 95% of standard Proctor density at a moisture r:ontent near optimum. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface gn:ic!ed to prevent ponding within at least 10 teet of the building. P.02/03 T.h'~ McNulty Subdivision is underlain by Pennsylvanian age Eagle Valley Evaporite bedrock. The evaporite contains gypsum deposits. Dissolution of the gypsum under certain conditjons can cause sinkholes to develop and can produce areas of locali:;wd sul-,sidencc. Sinkholes were not observed in the immediate area of the subject lor and the trench was relatively shallow. Based on our present knowledge or the site,. it cannot be said for certain that sinkholes will not develop. In our opinion, the risk of ground suhsidence at Lot 2 is low but the owner should be aware of the potential for sinkhole development. ·n~e recommendations submitted itJ this Jetter are based on our-observation of the soils exposed within the trench excavation. This study is based on the assumption that soils at other parts of the building have equal or better support tllan those exposed in the treitch. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in-this report be.caustl of possible variations in the subsurface eondftion.s. If variations Rrc encountered in the foundation excavation, we should be contacted to revise the recommendations contained in this letter. If there are any questions or if we may he of further assistance, please let us know. Situ:erely, HEPWORTH-PAWLAK GEOTECHNICAL, INC. J6rdy Z. Adamson, Jr., P.E.
