43F-Ildefonso stony loam, 2S to 4S percent slopes. This deep,
well draine d, hilly to s te e p soil is on mesa b reaks , valley s ideslopes ,
and alluvial fans. A smal l portion of this unit is found on very s t eep
to extremely steep mes a escarpments . It f orme d in mix e d alluvium,
primarily of basalt origin . A thin cap of reddish colored eolian soil
material is found intermittently in thi s ma pping unit . Elevation
ranges from S,000 to 6,SOO feet. The av erage annual precipitation is
about 14 inches, the average annual air temperature is about 46 degrees
F., and the average fro s t-free period i s abo ut 1 2S days.
Typically, the surface layer is brown stony loam about 2 inches
I
( thick. The subsurface layer is b ro wn s t ony lo am about 6 inches thick.
The underlying ma t erial is white v e ry s tony loam t hat is very strongly
calcareous and ext ends to a depth of more than 60 inches .
Included with this soil in mapping are sm all areas of Potts and
Ascalon soils. These soils are found on the less s teep and depressional
areas of the landscape. Th e y make u p about S to lS percent of the unit.
Permeability of th e Ildefonso soil is rapi d. Effective rooting
depth is 20 to JO inches. Available water capacity is low. Surface
runoff i s medium and erosion hazard is hi&h.
Ildefonso soil is u sed mainly for limite d grazing and for wil d-
life habitat.
The native v egetat ion on thi s soil is ma inly pinyon pine and Utah
/ juniper. The understory vegetation consists of Indian ricegrass, beard-...
less wheatgrass , junegrass , stemless go lde nw eed, low phlox, serviceberry ,

When the veg etation d eteriora tes w1d e r the pinyon-juniper , g ras ses

ment of the vegetation on t h is soil will ma i n t ain a wo o d p roduc t and

canopy cover. Fire wood , pos ts, and Chri s t mas tre e s ma y b e obtaine d
on the more g en tle slopes .
This soil i s s u ited to the p r oduction of pinyon pine an~ Utah
juniper. It is capabl e of producing 9 c ords per acre when the stand
attains an average diame t e r (at one foot) o f fiv e inc h e s for t ree s
over 4.5 feet in heig ht. The low availabl e water capacity can influence
tree s e edling s urviva l . St e e p sl opes a n d a hig h ero s i on h azard will
influence haI~e sting o perations .
Some of the wildlife using this soil for habitat include mule
deer, chukar, wild turkey, gray squirrel , and cottont ail rabb i t.
Ildefonso soil is limited for community development by a high
content of ston e s and s t eep slopes . It i s e asi ly erod e d and runoff
diversion str uctures are n e e ded for any road s c ons t r u c t e d on this
soil. Capability subc l a s s VIIe.
