Job No. 112 202A
Subject: Excavation Observation, Proposed Bachman Residence, Lot 9A, Elk
Valley Estates, County Road 241, Garfield County, Colorado
Dear David:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical observed the excavation
at the subject site on September 19, 2012 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation
support. We also tested structural fill placed below the proposed building footing areas
on a part-time basis. The findings of our observations and test results with respect to the
foundation design are presented in this report. We previously conducted a subsoil study
for design of foundations at the site and presented our findings in a report dated July 19,
2012, Job No. 112 202A.
The proposed construction is similar to that discussed in our previous report. The
foundation design consists of spread footings bearing on 3 feet of compacted structural
fill using an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf, based on recommendations
provided in our subsoil study report.
Between September 6 and 12, 2012 we tested compaction of the onsite soils moisture
conditioned and placed below the proposed footing areas of the building on a part -tune
basis. The results of laboratory Proctor testing performed on a sample of the onsite soils
used as structural flI are provided on Figures 1 and 1A. The compaction test results are
also attached and the results indicate the soils were compacted to a minimum 98%
standard Proctor density as recommended.
On September 19, we observed the completed foundation excavation to have been cut in
several levels from about 2V2 to 10 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils
exposed in the bottom of the excavation footing areas consisted of the compacted on-site

structural fill. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were
generally moist.
The soil conditions exposed in the excavation are consistent with those previously
encountered on the site and structural fill properly placed and compacted, and suitable for
support of spread footings designed for the recommended allowable bearing pressure of
2,000 psf. There is some risk of foundation settlement if the underlying natural bearing
soils become wetted as discussed in our previous report. Prior to the footing construction,
any loose disturbed soils should be removed and the subgrade re -compacted as needed.
Other reconnrnendations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also
be observed.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the foundation excavation and the previous subsurface exploration at the
site. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk
of foundation movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered in the
excavation conditions for possible changes to recommendations contained in this letter.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call our office.
Sincerely,
HEPWORTH — PAWLAK GEOTECHNICAL, INC.
