The deck addition will be made with 4x4 posts, 2x10 beam (deck
frame), 2x8 joists, 2x2 balusters (1 call them rails or spindles) and 2x6
top hand rail to match the existing deck.
It will be constructed with treated pine.
The under sections of the deck will be skirted with brown PVC lattice.
I will be putting in footers (noted by circles under the new addition. The
footers will be at least 3 feet deep (code) and will also be at least 6-8 inches
above ground level. To attach the deck to the existing deck I am going to
bolt on a 2 x 8 ledger below the existing 2x 10 rim joist. I will then attach
my hangers to the existing rim joist and ledger. My main frame of the deck
will be 2 x 10 so as to snatch the existing deck. I know that it is overkill but
it will match. I was then going to use 2 x 8 hangers as joists between the two
outside joists.
We designed the deck addition with one 7 '/ inch step down from the
existing deck. We will remove a small portion of the existing deck railing to
make the deck addition a somewhat separate deck.
Thank you for your time and let me know what else I need to complete the
application process. I am new at this and trying to learn what to do.
Thanks,
Rolf Hermanson
