To Whom It May Concern:
Based on my inspection of the construction that had occurred as of May 26, 2010,
my discussions with Steve Davis of Epic Notions Construction, and review of
several photographs taken during construction both before May 26 and since that
time, it is my opinion that the recently added, reinforced and fully grouted
concrete masonry unit (CMU) fireplace was properly founded on a reasonably
sized reinforced concrete footing that likely bears on undisturbed natural soil and
was doweled into the existing building foundation. Furthermore, the CMU was
extended to provide proper bearing for the existing roof ridge beam, including a
connection which should be adequate to resist normal design wind uplift forces.
The lateral force resistance system for the building has not been adversely
affected, because the CMU fireplace and chimney are adequate in shear and
overturning capacity to replace the previous section of log wall. Similarly, gravity
support systems have not been altered from the original construction.
