Compaction testing was performed between December 4 and 9, 2003. Our observations, recommendations and test results arc presented in this report. We previously conducted a subsoil study for design of foundations at the site and presented our findings in a report dated May 29, 2003, Job No. 103 252. The proposed residence will a single story wood frame structure with an attached garage. Ground floor will be slab -on -grade. The footing elevation will be raised above existing grade with approximately 2 feet with compacted imported gravel. At the time of our initial visit to the site, the building area had been prepared by loosening the upper 1 foot of soil. The loosened soils were left in place to protect the subgrade from freciing. We understand that the loosened soils were removed and the exposed subgrade compacted prior to placement of structural fill. The subgrade soils below the loosened material consisted of sandy silty clay. Results of swell - consolidation testing performed on samples of the subgrade taken from the site, shown on Figures 1 and 2, indicate tow compressibility under existing low moisture conditions and Tight loading and a low collapse potential (settlement under a constant load) when wetted. The samples showed moderate to high compressibility with increased loading atter wetting. No free water was encountered and the subgrade soils were slightly moist to moist. We were informed at rhe site that 3 -inch road Kase would he used for Parker 303.841.7119 • Colorado Springs 719-633-5562 • Silverrhorne 970-466.1989 DEC -11-2003 14:53 Harry Colborn December 11, 2003 Page 2 GEOTECH P.©3, 15 str crura! fill below the footings and slabs -on -grade, and that fill placement would begin later that day. A sample of the structural fill (3 -inch road base) was obtained from a stockpile at the site and returned to our laboratory for testing. The test results ate shown on Figures 3 and 4. 2g11r't7;ai;',' e (. i 1 2003 Multiple site visits were made between December 4 and 9. 2003 to observe structural ()Alt JAIN fill placement below footing and Flab -on -grade areas and perform nuclear gauge „UIVSI II' HMI. \L moisture/density testing. Density test results are presented in the attached daily "Earthwork Observation and Testing Reports". Maximum standard Proctor density and optimum moisture values were not available during in the initial phase of the fill placement and testing. Values of 140 pcf and 6% were assumed fun the maximum standard Proctor density and optimum moisture content during the first twu days of testing. It was recommended by our office to compact the structural fill to at least 98% of the maximum standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Fill was being placed in 1 foot lifts and compacted with a vibratory, smooth -drum roller. In general, the compaction effort appeared adequate and below optimum moisture conditions were measured. It was recommended in the field to scarify, moisten and recompact areas which did not meet the recommended project specifications. The earthwork observations and test results are attached. The suhgrade conditions exposed in the building footprint are generally consistent with those previously encountered on the site and suitable for placement of stnictural fill. Structural fill consisting of the stockpiled 3 -inch road base compacted to at least 98% percent of the maximum standard Proctor density appears adequate for placement below footings and slabs -on -grade. Based on our observations and compaction test results, the structural fill placed for building support appears suitable for spread footings designed for 1,500 psf as recommended in our previous subsoil study. The exposed subgrade should be protected from freezing, and fill or concrete should not be placed on frozen ground. Other recommendations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be observed. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the suhgrade soils exposed within the building footprtnt, the previous limited subsurface exploration at the site and compaction test results. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the structural fill could increase the risk of inundation movement. If any variations are encountered m the subgrade conditions or design changes made, we lou #103 252 H\'GSGtec+ , DEC -11-2003 14:53 P GEDTECH Harry Colborn December 11, 2003 Page 3 should be contacted to review the recommendations contained in this letter.
