The site visit was conducted on October 1, 2002 and our observations, discussions and recommendations are as presented below. Observations 1. The cabin is of single story construction approximately 24' wide x 30' deep. 2. Construction is conventional wood frame with the floor constructed over a crawl space. Foundation consists of spread footers around the perimeter with piers supporting the bearing wall and also mid span of the floor joists. The root is of 4:12 slope and constructed of 2x4 rafters at 24" o.c. with 2x4 purlins at mid -span braced at 6' o.c. to the bearing wall line at the center. The ceiling joists are 2x6 at 16" o.c, and span from the side walls to the center bearing line, where a 2x6 splice is provided. Discussion Based on our calculations, it is our conclusion that the existing framing is not adequate to carry the required 50 pst snow load. The purlin bracing is insufficient, the rafters are over -stressed, and there are several connection concerns. Recommendations To resist the required snow loading, the existing roof framing may be reinforced as shown on the attached detail. The existing rafters, joists and bracing may remain in place with the added bracing and fasteners added as shown on the- accompanying detail.
