Job No. 103 369 Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Krauth Residence, County- Road 241 (East Elk Creek Road). Garfield County, Colorado Dear Mr. Girard: As requested. a representative of Hepworth•Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the excavation at the subject site on June 9. 2003 to evaluate the materials exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The services were performed in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to you. dated June 5, 2003. Evaluation of potential geologic hazards that may impact the residence is beyond the scope of services requested. The residence will be single story wood -frame structure over a walkout basement level with an attached garage. Ground floors will be slab -on -grade. The building his been designed to be supported on spread footings assuming an allowahle soil bearing pressure of 1,500 psf. The site is moderately steeply sloping down to east with steep slopes above the building site. The site has been graded with moderate cuts and fills. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation was nearly complete and had been cut in two levels from about 4 to 10 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The footing trench along the downhill side of the residence was being dug at the time of our visit. The materials exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted primarily of medium dense silty clayey sand with scattered gravel and cobbles. In portions of the deeper cuts along the uphill side, sandstone bedrock was exposed at subgrade. Results of swell -consolidation testing performed on a sample taken from the site, shown on Figure 1, indicate the sand soils have low to moderate compressibility under conditions of loading and wetting. The sample showed a low hydro -compression potential. No Parker 303.841-7119 • Colorado Springs 719.633.5562 • Silverthome 970.468.1989 TOTAL P.05 H -P GEGTECH Girard Homes June 12. 2003 Page free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils and bedrock were slightly moist. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil and bedrock designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 1.500 psf can be used for support of the proposed residence. Footings bearing entirely on sandstone bedrock can be designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 3,000 psf. There is some risk of differential settlement due to the variable bearing conditions, especially if the soils become tiet. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Al] existing fill, topsoil and loose or disturbed material in footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils or bedrock. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Four.dation walls acting as retaining structures should also be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 50 pcf for on-site soil and well broken bedrock as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the basement level. The underdrain system should include and be connected to at least 4 inches of free draining gravel below the basement slabs. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site soils compacted to at least 95% of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfill placed around the structure should be well compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building. A. swale may be needed around the uphill side of the residence to divert surface water. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the materials and bedrock exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This study is based on the assumption that materials beneath the footings have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the sob #103 369 G5tech • h -h' UtuitL.H Girard Homes June 12, 2003 ,Page 3 subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
