Box 932 161 South 2nd St. Hotchkiss, CO 81419 970.872.3020 www.eroresources.com TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM RESULTS OF A CLASS I FILE AND LITERATURE REVIEW CULTURAL AND HISTORIC RESOURCES MRI WASTE TRANSFER/RECYCLING CENTER Prepared for MRI February 16, 2012 A file search was conducted with the Colorado Historical Society Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (CHS OAHP) on behalf of MRI for the proposed MRI Waste Transfer/Recycling Center project. The legal location of the project area Sections 35 and 36 Township 7 S Range 88 W, 6th Prime Meridian, Garfield County, Colorado. The parcel number is 2393-354-00-056, and the practical location is approximately 1 mile east of Carbondale at 1058 CR 100. A project location figure was provided to OAHP for the file search and results were returned electronically on February 13, 2012. The purpose of this memo and of the Class I file and literature search is to satisfy the requirements of the Garfield County ULUR, as amended, Article IV Section 4-502E part 8b: A determination of the effect on significant archaeological, cultural, paleontological, or historic resources. The Class I file and literature search served to compile information as to whether previous cultural resource inventories have been conducted or previous cultural resources have been documented within the project area. Those cultural resources eligible, potentially eligible, or listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) require consideration of potential adverse impacts. The Class I review resulted in the identification of one previous cultural resource inventory conducted within the project area. This survey only included a small portion of the subject property. • MC.CH.R94 — A Class III Cultural Resource Survey, Roaring Fork Railroad Authority Environmental Impact Statement, Glenwood Springs to Brush Creek Transportation Corridor, multiple counties, Colorado Two cultural resources were documented as a result of this project and which occur within the current project area: 1. 5GF.1661 — Denver & Rio Grande Railroad — Aspen Branch 2. 5GF.3014 — D&RG Railroad — siding and trash dump Consultants in Natural Resources and the Environment MRI Page 2 The D&RG Railroad is listed as officially eligible for the listing on the NRHP and would be avoided during project implementation. Site 5GF.3014 includes a section of railroad siding and an associated trash dump; it is recommended eligible for the NRHP, but the site has not been reviewed by OAHP. This site would also be avoided by the project. Both eligible and potentially eligible resources would be avoided, and the project would not have an effect on historic properties.
