Dear Mr. Easley: As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed a utility trench excavation and backhoe pit at the subject site on May 17, 2002 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our work and recommendations for the.foundation design are presented in this report. The work was done in accorclanrr with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Lighthill Development, dated May 13, 2002. The proposed residence will be a two story wood frame structure over a 11111 basement level. The attached garage and basement floors will be slab -on -grade. The site is relatively fiat with a gentle slope down to the west and about 3 to 4 feet of elevation difference across the lot. A golf course pond is located on the western side of the lot. At the time of our visit to the site, a sewer line utility trench had been excavated immediately east of the building area. A backhoe pit was excavated on the west side of the building area. The soils exposed in the utility trench and backhoe pit consisted of about 2 to 21/2 feet of sandy clay with scattered gravel and organics (fill) overlying relatively dense, slightly silty sandy gravel with cobbles and boulders. No fret water was encountered in the utility trench or pit and the soils were slightly moist to moist. Considering the conditions exposed in the trench and pit and the nature of the proposed construction, we recommend spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural gravel soils designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 3,000 psf for support of the proposed residence. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns Loose and disturbed soils and existing fill In footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural gravel soils. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 10 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be 2 • ; MAY -22-2062 10:59 H—P GEOTECH Lighthill Development May 21. 2002 Page 2 designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 45 pcf for on-site gravels, excluding oversized rock, as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site soils compacted to at least 95% of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building. P. 03/03 The Aspen Glen development is underlain by Pennsylvanian -age Eagle Valley Evaporite bedrock. The evaporite contains gypsum deposits. Dissolution of the gypsum under certain conditions can cause sinkholes to develop and can produce areas of localized subsidence. During previous work in the area, several broad subsidence areas and smaller size sinkhole areas were observed scattered throughout the Aspen Glen development. Sinkholes were not observed in the mediate area of the subject lot. The risk of ground subsidence on Lot E-9 throughout the service life of the proposed residence, in our opinion is considered lot, however, the owner should be made aware of the potential for sinkhole development. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the utility trench and pit excavation. This srudy is based on the assumption that soils at other parts of the building have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. If variations are encountered in the foundation excavation, we should be notified to reevaluate the recommendations contained in this letter. If there are any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know. Sincerely, HEPWORTH -.
