This letter is being written to clarifythe ape potions. In 3 arras, the roof
overhang penetrates the envelope. The code allows for a one foot, six inch penetration of
the envelope by the roof overhang. As noted on the Site/Grading/Landscape Plan, sheen
A 2.1, the envelope penetrations are:. 1=6, 1-3, and 1-4: Therefore, we comply with the
code requirements as interpreted and confirmed by the gilding and planning staff.
Please feel fret to contact nie with any other.darifiications that may be necessary to
finalize the plan check process.

Re: Lot 27, Sunlight View II Subdivision, Geotechnical Design/Build Approach
Paul & Tracy:
As requested, we have reviewed the "Preliminary Geotechnical Study, Sunlight View
Phase II, 4 -Mile Road, Garfield County, Colorado" report dated January 31, 2000 prepared
by HP Geotech for Mr. Bill Zilm. This review was conducted to assess the approach to
foundation design and construction of the residence anticipated for Lot 27.
The geotechnical report indicates that a fine-grained soil exists from the surface to depths
that range from 3% -ft to greater than 8 -ft. Coarse, boulder laden alluvial deposits underlie
the surficial soils. An allowable foundation bearing capacity of 3,000 to 4,000 psf was
recommended for the alluvium. The surficial soils exhibit a low to moderate swell and/or a
slight compressive potential upon loading and wetting, therefore, the report recommends an
allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 to 3,000 psf (compressive) and a minimum dead load
pressure of 800 to 1,000 psf to accommodate for swell. Therefore, HP Geotech
recommends that an "evaluation of the bearing conditions be made for the individual
buildings when their location, grading and loadings have been determined".
Due to the potential variability in the depth of the surficial soils, we recommend that the
Architect design the size of the foundations in accordance with the criteria referenced
above making an assumption of the bearing strata based upon depth below the existing
ground surface (ie... Pit 2 < 200 -ft from Lot 27, 7 -ft of surficial soils). Once excavation
for the foundation is underway, on-site observation of the excavation and foundation strata
can be evaluated prior to foundation construction and will confirm and/or adjust the
foundation size in accordance with the Architect's design assumptions.
We look forward to providing consultation services during construction of the Lot 27
foundation conditions. We are confident that the observational method of foundation
design and construction will be the most economical approach to the owner.
