These framing elements are, the single trimmer studs under the triple 2x12 header with a span of 7'-9 1/2" over a window opening, a total of two(2) windows. Additionally, I was asked to investigate three (3) Glu -Lam beams and the supporting columns. Presently, the 3.125 x 12 Glu -Lams that I numbered B101, 8102 and B103, have spans of 20 feet, 20 feet and 22.5 feet, respectively. Preliminary calculations determined that the Glu -Lam beams for these spans are insufficient. You have indicated that your preferred solution would be the addition of intermediate columns. You have directed us to determine the maximum span of the GIu-Iam beams and the appropriate column size. You provided me with the design sheets for trusses T1A, B4 & C2 prepared by BMC West - Orem Truss, Lindon, Utah 84042, Job No. 62191. Foundation Plans were prepared by Schmueser Gordon Meyer, Inc., Project No. 2001-224.001, August 7, 2001. We reviewed the framing based on the following loads: Roof 20 psf dead 40 psf snow Wind 85 mph, Exposure B We have analyzed the window trimmer and header system assuming the 2x6 members are Spruce Pine Fir, Stud Grade or better. We have also assumed that the king stud and the trimmer are sufficiently fastened together to act as a single unit, at a minimum 16d @ 12" O.C. in a staggered pattern. With the full roof and wind loads applied, this system is sufficient to support the loads. Based on the above information, the conclusions of our analysis of the beams and columns are summarized in the following table: Beam Number /Existing Span B101/ 20' span B1021 20' span B103/ 22.5' span Trusses bearing on beam B4 and TlA C2 and T1A C2 Beam Size 3.125" x 12" 3.125" x 12" 3.125" x 12" Beam Classification 1 GIu-Lam 24F V4 GIu-Lam 24F V4 GIu-Lam 24F V4 Maximum Span 10 feet 10 feet 8 feet Sawn timber Column 4x10 DF No 1/ No 2 4x10 DF No 1/ No 2 4x10 DF No 1/ No 2 1.) Our calculations were based on the 24F V4 rating. You indicated to me that you were able to verify this rating though your supplier, BMC West 945-5464. Solid blocking shall be provided between the base of the columns and the foundation. During my site visit we discussed using multiple studs or sawn timbers for columns. In this case the loads a sufficiently large to require the use of sawn timbers for columns. Should you have any questions concerning the above, please call me at 970-945-1004.
