The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Tito Villiere, dated March 15, 2001. The proposed construction will be two stories of wood frame construction above a crawlspace with an attached garage. Ground floors in the garage will be slab -on -grade. Footings were designed to impose a maximum bearing pressure of 3,000 psf and be placed on the undisturbed gravel soils. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation bad been cut in one level about 4 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of dense, silty sandy gravel with cobbles. The slab area for the garage consisted of slightly sandy silty clay. Results of swell -consolidation testing performed on a sample of the clay taken from the site, shown on Fig. 1, indicate the soils have low to moderately compressibility under conditions of loading and wetting. The sample showed a minor expansive potential when wetted under a constant light surcharge. The results of a gradation analysis performed on a saruple of the gravels at footing grade subgrade (minus 5 inch fraction) obtained from the site are presented on Fig. 2. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist t0 moist. P. 02/@3 Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural gravel soil designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 3,000 psf should be adequate for support of the proposed residence. The clay soils exposed in the garage slab area have variable settlement/heave potential, and there could be some post -construction movement of the slab if the subgrade soils become wetted. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Loose and disturbed soils in footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be MAP -23--2001 09:23 Custom Building March 23, 2001 Page 2 H -P GEOTECH P.03/03 4 {• reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 10 feet, Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 45 put* for on-site gravel soil or compacted screened rock as backfill. Structural till placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site gravel soils compacted to at least 95 % of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfell placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building. The recor[uncndations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
