Adequate and complete information will prevent delays in the plan review process. Reviewing a plan and the discovery that required information has not been provided by the applicant may result in the delay of the permit issuance and in proceeding with building construction. The owner or contractor may be required to provide this information before the plan review may proceed. This causes delays because other plans that are in line for review may be given attention before the new information may be reviewed after it has been provided to the Building Department. Please review this document to determine if you have enough information to design your project and provide adequate information to facilitate a plan review. If you do not, it may be helpful to obtain a book titled "Dwelling Construction under the Uniform Building Code". This book is available to you through this department at our cost. Also, please consider using _a design professional for assistance in your design and a construction professional for construction of your project. There is a cross section diagram of the unit, but the firebox dimensions are not listed, The firebox can't be altered on site because the door mounts directly to a plate that comes attached to the firebox. 1 called the contractor I bought the unit from who also set the fireplace (Cornerstone Heating and Air), They are not affiliated with me. They called the manufacturer, but they don't have a listing of the dimensions either. They did fax me a safety evaluation that t can send to you, but parts are difficult to read since it's already been faxed twice, Let me know it this information is sufficient, or if you would like a copy of the evaluation I mentioned, The unit is U,L, listed according to the information I'm faxing. d Ts' A P.01 FED -27-01 01:36 PM REX AND LESLIE SMITH THIS KIVA FIREPLACE HAS THREE BASIC COMPONENTS: 1) KIVA FIREBOX STRUCTURE made of precast components consisting of firebrick and lightweight concrete. 2) DOUBLE WALL METAL CHIMNEY SYSTEM with a steel anchor plate / damper. (See manufacturers instructions on page 3) All fireboxes are equipped with a combustible outside air system. 3) EXTERIOR FIREPLACE FACE Is fabricated of a tubular steel and diamond - mesh frame mounted to and housing the firebox. This frame Is coated with three coats of stucco after installation. *-^ l ..• v7 LIws7+ ICJ 9702855624 P.02 Jee✓a o sib,e FEB -27-01 01:38 PM REX AND LESLIE SMITH 9702855624 • P. 03 COMBUSTIBLE AIR SYSTEM 1. The ventingloombuslible air system consists of three pieces. The exterior wall sleeve with the vent cover and the firebox outside combustible sir supply tube with closure bar. In new construction, the exterior wall sleeve/sap can be Installed at the same lime as the roof flashing by first cutting a hole In the sheeting between existing studs to allow full unobstructed sleeve penetration. then mount the sleeve cap on the outside or the exterior wall with 4 If8 x 1.1/2 hex head sett drilling screws. The location for wall penetration can be on either exterior wall, A location hole should be drilled from the inside out about 3" above the wood plate. Then, an opening B" high x 8' wide should be cut to receive the sleeve. 11 can be anywhere convenient 2. If the fireplace is not located on an exterior wall the sleeve with cover can be installed on a roof flue chase and then e flex•eluminum duct can be attached to the sleeve with enough duct to reach the floor On which the firebox seta, Notes Combustible air supply ducts should not terminate in attic space 3. The firebox outside air supply tube Is equipped with the necessary mounting brackets and sorewe. it should be mounted on the face of the base with the bottom of the tube on the horizontal line on the base and centered. The attached diamond mesh will be attached to the fireplace frame after it Is in place. EXTERIOR FIREPLACE FRAME AND FINISHING 1. The supplied frame attachment mesh should be centered up the outaide of the center Section 0f the firebox with the slits in the mesh lacing into the firebox, then should be screwed onto the faoe of this center section using 2112" deck screws with two rows of screws approximately 2" apart on each side of center firebox section and aeross the top. 2 Assembling fireplace frame: any additional frame extension section required should be attached to the main frame while the frame is lying down. The uncovered tubing on the frame extension should be slid between the curved frame supports and the mesh as lar as possible, then secured through the holes In the extension frame Into the mala frame. Any overlapping mesh should be then screwed to the frame. 3. II the hearth is not attached 10 the firebox frame and is in tow sections, assemble the two hearth sections by se iiIng the tubing into the connector provided and tighten the two sections together. Place the main frame upright and attsoh the hearth by placing the hearth upright and attach by Installing screws through the holes in the tubing Into the main trams, Secure any loose overlapping mesh witty 112" x Sb sell drilling &heel metal screws, 4. Place the entire lrame assembly into corner as fax as poseibia, Measure out from corner to the face Of the main frame, just above the hearth, adjust until distance is equal. Screw the main frame onto the sheetrook every a' alOng the mesh flange provided on each side 01 the frame. Attach the adjustable ceiling mesh by screwing to the main frame and thin to the ceiling. 6. If the exsericr kiva frame has a separate lop section, first Secure tile lop section. Measure out from the earner el the ceiling and mark the wall 2'0" out and adjust the frame to the marks. Screw the frame to the wall as above. FEB -27-01 01:39 PM REX AND LESLIE SMITH 9702855524 UNDERSTANDING YOUR FIREPLACE This Intertek Testing Service Inc. listed fireplace has been tested to U.L. 127 test standards and is well insulated for safe clearances to combustible construction materials used to build your home. The proper clearances are outlined by a label on each component for use by the installers and by the local building inspector to insure compliance. FIREBOX: The firebox is the portion that the fire is built in and is made of precast components consisting of firebrick and light -weight concrete. This is surrounded by a fabrication of tubular steel and diamond mesh frame mounted to and housing the firebox. This frame is coated with three layers of stucco after installation, The air space between the firebox and outer enclosure provides the circulating feature that has been engineered far a safe and efficient design, DO NOT OVER FIRE FIREPLACE CHIMNEY SYSTEM: The chimney is also made of metal extending from the top of the fireplace through the roof and cupped with a screened termination. The inner liner (fluc) of the chimney is made of stainless steel and provides for the exhaust of gases (carbon monoxide) from the fire. The outer liner is made of galvanized steel .tnd (provides the passage for cooling air to keep the chimney safe at labeled clearance to combustible building materials, DAMPER: positions. The damper is the metal disk found at the base of the chimney (flue) and has two (2) open and closed. (see DAMPER OPERATION). ptMPE The flue gas dumper is located inside the firebox similar to a conventional masonry fireplace. Look within the top of the fireplace and locate the damper handle extending from the damper, Pushing the lever opens the damper. The reverse closes it. This can be easily accomplished with a fireplace poker. AI JCILOPERATIL»L: The damper for the air kit control is located on the.inside of the fireplace. See the installation instructions of your fireplace for the operation. FIREPLACE..01163,E: The unit bus an optional grate designed to keep the operation of your fireplace efficient and safe. Do not attempt to defeat its purpose. The size and position of the grate was engineered to give the ideal combustion characteristics for the Fre, By keeping your logs within the grate and not on the hearth, ycru will prevent the chance of having a log "spill" or roll out of the fireplace. DO NOT OVERLOAD THE FIREPLACE. Piling excessive wood on your grate will not increase efficiency and could possibly cause smoke to enter your room. When replacing grate, replace with approved replacement grate for your fireplace model only.
