Box 939 Carbondale, Colorado 81623 Job No. 108 l21A Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Residence, Lot E-1 0, Aspen Equestrian Estates, Garfield County, Colmado Dear Mr. Cutright: As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the excavation at the subject site on July 14, 2008 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support The findings of our observations and recommendations tor the fuundation design are presented in this report We previously conducted a subsoil study for design of toundatious at the site and presented our findings in a report dated April 22, 2008, Job No. 108 l21A. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in one level l to 2 teet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of silty sandy clay. Free water was observed in a pit dug at the southwest corner of the excavation at 33 inches below grade. The excavation base soils were moist to very moist, A pit was dug at the northwest comer during our visit to Vt-'rHy depth to sandy gravel soils and g;:ounclwater conditions. The sandy gravel soils were encountered 18 inches below the present grade and groundwater was seeping into the pit about 12 inches below grade. The soil conditions exposed in the excavation are consistent with those previously encountered on the site and suitable for support of spread footings bearing on the sandy gravel soils designed tor the recommended allowable bearing pressure of 2,500 psf The sandy silty clay soil should be removed from beneath footing areas and the grade re- established with structural fill compacted to at least 98 percent of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. We understand the structural tlll will be mined on . ! . . . Clearwater Construction Management July 31, 2008 Page 2 site. Other recommendations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also he observed. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation a11d the previous (limited) subsurface exploration at the site. Variations in the subsmface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk of foundation movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered in the excavation conditions tor possible changes to recommendations contained in this letter.
