Mr. Ray Baldwin
County Planning Director
2014 Blake Avenue
Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601
Dear Mr. Baldwin:
February 4, 1981
We most certainly want it known that we strenuously object to the
Sillivan Brothers proposed Casa del Monte Subdivision to be located on
County Road 129 in the No Name Community southwest of the I-70 Interchange.
The property which has come to be known as Grossgarten was purchased
by us in 1951 from Captain Lynn Boggs who in turn acquired the land from
Mr. Brown, the original homesteader.
My family and I have spent every summer since the year of purchase
and all but two holiday seasons in the log cabin on this property.
Since 1977, the year of my retirement, we have been in residence
approximately six months of each year.
The area is rural by nature. It is a haven for hikers, bikers,
fishermen, and birdwatchers. Townspeople drive out in the evenings,
park their cars, and joined by members of the community, stroll along
the river evidencing the desire for a readily accesible nature walk.
Added vehicular traffic, family pets, and people housed in a
modern subdivision would badly erode the landscape and the rural way of
life so dear to those of us who chose long ago to make No Name our home.
Tantamount is the water situation. The study made last fall was
within a highly deceptive time frame. Several neighbors had closed
their houses and left for the winter season while others of us had
ceased watering lawns and shrubs. It was also vacation period for
several families.
My family and I have survived the terror of fire in our community
when flames burning out of control enveloped trees and other growth on
the site of the proposed subdivision. With the existing already inadequate
water supply, from whence will our help come?
Also, we have experienced the genocide of trout in No Name Creek
when the City of Glenwood used its full quota of water during the dry
summers which seem to be upon us once more. Add to this tragedy * the
stench of dead fish and water life which we were forced to endure.
Those who seek to develop the No Name area in question seek to
do so for profit. They will not remain to solve the problems their
action will create.
We ask that you, Mr. Baldwin, and the county commissioners
seriously consider maintaining the No Name Community as a rural area
where those who live, jog, bike, walk, and fish along the banks of the
river may continue to enjoy the heritage that has made Colorado
famous.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. A. F. Gross
