Lot D 38, Aspen Glen, 0180 Seeburg Circle, Garfield County, Colorado Dear Mr. Salvato; As requested. a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the excavation at the subject site on November 30 and December l, 2015 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. We previously conducted a subsoil study for design of foundations at the site and presented our findings in a report dated January 9, 2015, Job No. 114 550A. The proposed residence will consist of a two story wood frame structure over a crawlspace with a slnlron-grade garage floor. Spread footings sized for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 1,500 psf were used in the design. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in one level from about 3 to S feet below the adjacent ground surface. Generally, the soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of dense. slightly silty, sandy gravel with rounded cobbles. However, very stiff, silty. sandy clay was observed in approximately 10% of the excavation at the northeastern end. We recommended the clay soils be removed to expose the gravel below. When observed on December I. the excavation had been deepened about 1 ~ feet at the northeastern end. The clay soils had been excavated out to expose the underlying gravel soils and that portion of the excavation was about 6~ feet below adjacent ground surface. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist The soil conditions exposed in the excavation are consistent with those previously encountered on the site and are suitable for support of spread footings designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 2,500 psf as previously recommended. The bearing soils should be protected from frost and concrete should not be placed on frozen soils. Other recommendations presented in our previous repon which are applicable should also be observed. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk of foundation movement We should be advised of any variations encountered in the excavation conditions for possible changes to recommendations contained in this letter. The party-wall concrete footings should be a minimum 8" wider than the supporting concrete stem wall. Therefore, the 1 '-2 1h " party-wall stem-wall should have a minimum 1 '-10 Yi'' concrete footing under it. This footing should be 12" deep with (3)- #4 bars running continuous at 3" from grade.
