MEMORANDUM
Rail Post Base
It is my understanding that you will use the existing steel base assemblies to connect the
rail log posts to the deck. This assembly is observed as a 1 1/ 4"o x 16" standard steel
pipe, welded to a base plate 3/8" x 8" x 8". This base is attached to the deck with 8- 3"
washer head screws through 1 /4"o holes around the plate perimeter. The assembly is
waterproofed, and the stone topping is placed over the base, and around the pipe. A
bearing plate 3/8' x 6" x 6" octagon is placed over the pipe onto the stone, and the log
post is drilled to fit snug over the pipe.
Based on the code 200 pound lateral force at the top of post, the connection to the wood
deck is acceptable with the described screws, and must extend down into joists or
blocking between joists.
