The.e soils make up 5 to 10 pc -r, nt of IJ : Permeability of the Heldt soil is very slow. Effective rooting •depth is 60 inches or more. Available water capacity is high. Surface runoff is medium and the erosion hazard is slight. This soil is used for irrigated cropland and hayland. Alfalfa, small grains, some corn for silage, and grass or grass -legume mixtures are grown. Intake rate is very slow and wide, de}., cracks develop when, the :coil dries. Irrigation rates and tillage practices mast be carefully planned to allow for soil conditions. 38B-Heldt clay loam The native vegetation on this soil is mainly western wheat- grass, junegrass,•big sagebrush, and low rabbitbrush. When the range condition deteriorates, forbs and woody shrubs increase. When the range is in poor condition, undesirable weeds and 2 annual plants are numerous. Wildlife using this soil for habitat include cottontail rabbit, 'squirrel, mourning dove, and pheasant. This soil has potential for community and recreational develop- ments. The main limiting features for these uses are slow permeability, high clay content, and shrink -swell. Dwellings and roads can be designed to compensate for the low strength and shrink -swell properties of this soil. The use of septic tank absorption fields is severely limited because of very slow permeability. Community sewage disposal systems are needed if population density increases. A water sample for chemi_a. ,:n::ysis was Cc1— iected during this 50 gpm pumping rate. The test pump was then pulled from the existing well and installed alone, with -the various piping and measuring apparatus in the new well. The new well was then pumped at a rate of 23 gpm and at 50 gpm, which duplicated the pumping completed on the existing well. In general, the various pump testing encountered no problems and went smccth- iy, with the assistance of Bob Barrett, for the pump installations and data taking. HYDROLOGIC ANALYSIS: Information on the existing Rippy well was obtained from the well log at the State Engineer's office. The new well ice has n;t been submitted to the State Engineer. For our analysis, we have consideree that both wells are identical with respect to geology and basic well con- struction. The old well log has the following information: Driller - Frank Stoneman Location - SE.' -NE', Section 5, T6S, R91W Drilled - September 25, 1964 Total Depth - 57 feet Static Water Level - 30 feet Casing - 7 -inch Production - bailed 20 gpm Log - 0 inch to 20 feet dirt, 20 feet to 43 feet sanc an grave 40 feet to 57 .feet gray sandy shale The two chemical water quality analyses results are enclosed on the attached Table No. 1. A review of the various chemical constituents indicates that water from boththe existing well and new well are nearly identical and satis- factory for domestic use. On the drawing entitled "nippy Well Locations'', the Old Weil and New Well are .shown, in addition to the First Attempt and hatched Well, which were reportedly unsatisfactory as replacement wells. Elevations and water levels on all four wells were obtained and the results are as shown. These water level elevations indicate that ground water is fwing in a generally souther- ly direction toward the Colorado River. On Figures Numbers 1, 2, and 3 are shown the draw: wn-time and drawdown - distance relationships that oc urred during the crawdcwn and recovery por- tions cf the pump tests.
