(Light green color) Has few or no limitations that restrict choice of crops or require conservation measures. Class II (Yellow color) Has some limitations that reduce the choice of crops or require moderate conservation measures. Class III (Red color) Has severe limitations that reduce choice of crops or require special conservation measures. Class IV_ (Blue color) Has very severe limitations that restrict choice of crops or require very careful management. Class V (Dark green color) Not suited to cultivation but has little or no hazard to use when in permanent vegetation. Class VI (Orange color) Not suited to cultivation; has limitations that make hazards to use even when kept in permanent vegetation. Physical conditions of land in this class are such that it is practical to apply range improvements such as seeding, contour furrowing, diversions, spreaders, pitting, etc., if needed. Class I,. Brown. Not suited to cultivation and has limitations ''tra make hazards to use even when kept in permanent vegetation. Physical conditions of land in this class make range improvement by mechanical means impractical or impossible. Class VIII (Purple color) Limitations are such that they preclude use of land for commercial plant production. The Department of Agriculture Land Capability Classification has eight broad capability classes. Subdivisions of these broad classes are used for detailed conservation planning. These subdivisions are referred to as Capability Units (treatment groups) on Cropland, as Range Sites on Rangelands, and as Woodland sites on forested lands. In the classification, permanent limitations of soil, slope, erosion and climate determine the capability class. Specific limitations of suit- ability for crops and needs of treatment determine the Capability Unit of croplands. Potential of the land to produce a certain kind and amount of grass determines Range Sites. Potential of the land to pro- duce a certain amount and kind of woodland products determines Woodland sites. r i l :cf.: June 1961 • • STANDARD SYMBOLS UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Soil Conservation Service Colorado WORKS & STRUCTURES Dwelling School_ Church Sawmills Mine or Quarry Windmill-• I rrigation P,'el 1O Oil or Gas Wel 1___ Corral__ Cj- Dam C( Levee Stream bank Protection / ROADS Paved Secondary_ _ _ Private or Trail Rail 1 1 1 1 FENCES General BOUNDARIES & MARKERS Land Use or Field__ ----_ Soil or Range Site_ Range Condition___ Bench Mark B M - X Section Corners Located Approx.
