Project No. 16-7-279
Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed CNG Shop Addition, 0298 County Road
333A, Garfield County, Colorado
Dear Ms. Fiscus:
As requested by Mark Viera with PNCI Construction, Inc., a representative of H-P/Kumar
observed the excavation at the subject site on September 28 and October 3 and 4, 20 J 6 to
evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and
recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. HP Geotech (now H-P
Kumar) previously conducted a subsoil study for design of foundations at the site for the origina1
development and presented our findings in a report dated April 23, 2002, HP Geotech Job No;
102 190. We also provided an addendum to the subsoil study for the proposed addition in a
report dated December J 7, 20 J 5, HP Geotech Job No. J 15 588A.
The proposed addition will be attached to the west side of the existing shop building. It is
designed to be supported on spread footings bearing on undisturbed bedrock or suitable
compacted structural fill with an allowable bearing pressure of 2,500 psf, based on our previous
reports.
At the time of our visit to the site on September 28, the foundation excavation had been cut in
one level, about 31/2 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of
the excavation consisted of siltstone/sandstone bedrock in about the southern two-thirds of the
excavation' and unsuitable clay and sand/silt soils in the northern o~e-third of the excavation. An
exploratory .test pit excavated at the north addition footing Jine exposed bedrock at about 7 feet
below design footing elevation. On October 3 and 4, we observed that the northern two-thirds of
the foundation excavation had been excavated about 31/2 to I J feet below design footing
elevation to expose sandstone/siltstone bedrock. No free water was encountered in the
excavation and the bedrock was slightly moist. We then observed imported minus 6-inch "pit
run" sandy gravel placed and compacted in relatively thin lifts to backfill the footing areas and
capped with compacted % inch aggregate base course to re-establish design footing grade. The
results of a gradation analysis performed on a sample of the "pit run" sandy gravel obtained from
the site, presented on Figure I indicate that the material was too rocky to test for compaction by
Garfield County Road and Bridge Department

Page 2
ASTM methods. Our compaction test results performed in the%" aggregate base course in the
footing areas are presented on Figure 2.
The soil conditions as observed and tested in the excavation are consistent with those previously
encountered on the site and suitable for support of spread footings designed for the
recommended allowable bearing pressure of 2,500 psf. The bearing soils should be protected
from frost and concrete should not be placed on frozen soils. Other recommendations presented
in our previous report which are applicable should also be observed.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed
within the foundation excavation and the previous subsurface exploration at the site. Variations
in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk of foundation
movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered in the excavation conditions for
possible changes to recommendations contained in this letter. Our services do not include
determining the presence, prevention or possibility of mold or other biological contaminants
(MOBC) developing in the future. If the client is concerned about MOBC, then a professional in
this special field of practice should be consulted.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call our office.
Sincerely,
H-P~KUMAR

Project No. 16-7-279
Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed CNG Shop Addition, 0298 County Road
333A, Garfield County, Colorado
Dear Ms. Fiscus:
As requested by Mark Viera with PNCI Construction, Inc., a representative of H-P/Kumar
observed the excavation at the subject site on September 28 and October 3 and 4, 2016 to
evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and
recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. HP Geotech (now H-P
Kumar) previously conducted a subsoil study for design of foundations at the site for the original
development and presented our findings in a report dated April 23, 2002, HP Geotech Job No.
102 190. We also provided an addendum to the subsoil study for the proposed addition in a
report dated December 17, 2015, HP Geotech Job No. 115 588A.
The proposed addition will be attached to the west side of the existing shop building. It is
designed to be supported on spread footings bearing on undisturbed bedrock or suitable
compacted structural fill with an allowable bearing pressure of 2,500 psf, based on our previous
reports.
At the time of our visit to the site on September 28, the foundation excavation had been cut in
one level, about 3'12 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of
the excavation consisted of siltstone/sandstone bedrock in about the southern two-thirds of the
excavation' and unsuitable clay and sand/silt soils in the northern o~e-third of the excavation. An
exploratory test pit excavated at the north addition footing line exposed bedrock at about 7 feet
below design footing elevation. On October 3 and 4, we observed that the northern two-thirds of
the foundation excavation had been excavated about 3Y2 to 11 feet below design footing
elevation to expose sandstone/siltstone bedrock.
The
results of a gradation analysis performed on a sample of the "pit run" sandy gravel obtained from
the site, presented on Figure 1 indicate that the material was too rocky to test for compaction by

ASTM methods. Our compaction test results performed in the W' aggregate base course in the
footing areas are presented on Figure 2.
Sincerely,
H-P~KUMAR
