Chimneys, General
Sec. 3703. (a) Chimney Support. Chimneys shall be designed, anchored,
supported and rcinfon:ed as required in tliis chapter and applicable provisions.of
Chapten 23, 24, 26. 27 and 29 of this code. A chimney shall not support ariy
structural load -olh.er than its own weight unfc:ss desLgned as a supporling member:

(b) Support. Masonry faeploces <hall be supporled on foundatioru designed
as specified in Chapters 23, 24 and 29.
When an approved design ts not provided. foundations for ma:soru)' and
concrete: fireplaces shall be noc less than l 2 tnc hes thick, ex.tend not less than 6
inches outside the fireplace -y,.·all and project be low lhe natural ground surf~ in
accordance with lhe depth of found acions set forth in Table No. 29-A.
(c) Fireplace Walls. Masonry walls of fireplaces shall be not less than 8 inches
in lhK:knc:s.s.. Walls of fireboxes shall be not less than 10 inches. in thickness,
except lhat where a lining of firebrick is used s.u:c:h walls shall be ooc less than a
total of g. inches in thickne-ss. The firebox shall be not less than 20 inches Ln depth.

Sections 3700, 3704 and 3705 for residential-type appli&nee<.
(h) Clearance to Combuotlble Material. Combustible material shall not be
placed wilhin I inch of fireplace, smok-e -chamber or chimney -walls. Combustible
ma1CriaJ shall not be placed within 6 inches of lhe fireplace opening. No such
combustible material within l 2 inches of the fireplace opening sh al I projccl more
d:wt K: iach for each 1-inch clearance from such opening.
No pan of metal hoods used as part of • fireplace or barbecue shall be le" than J
18 in<W from combostible material. This clearance may be reduced to the
minimum requi.Jcment:s. specified in the Mechanical Code.
