White - APPLICANT Yellow - DEPARTMENT ZAO Engineers, Ltd 2764 Compass Drive, #230 Grand Junction, CO 81506 (970) 241-5623 INDIVIDUAL SEWAGE .DISPOSAL SYSTEM DESIGN Design Date: May 14, 2009 Designer: Keith P. Mendenhall, PE ZAO Engineers, Ltd. 2764 Compass Drive, #230 Grand Junction, CO 81506 (970) 241-5623 Design Type: Commercial Building - New Construction Client: Site Location: Lear Construction PO Box 399 Grand Junction, CO 81502 (970) 216-0572 Attn: Loren Ennis High Plains Construction 0129 Callahan Court Parachute, CO 81635 Site description: The proposed site is located at 0192 Callahan Court in Parachute, Garfield County, CO. The. project location is shown on the site plans in Appendix A. The site is bordered on the north by Interstate 70, to the east by US Highway 6, to the west by a commercial lot and to thesouth by open space. A slight drainage depression flows west to east across a portion of the site. The eastern portion of the site exhibits native grasses and shrubs. Soil description: Soils were identified by the contracted geotechnical engineer performing the percolation tests. Sandy CLAY (fill) with traces of brown, moist, soft gravel were identified at a depth of between 0"-6"in. Soils between 6"-24" were lean CLAY with sand, gravel, and brown, dry organics (topsoil). Soils from 24"- 120" were interbedded CLAY with sand (CL) and silty, clayey gravel with sand (GC -GM) and brown, dry stiff/dense to soft/loose trace cobbles. The pert tests performed in the 36" to 42" indicated soils suitable for an absorption field. Design criteria: Based on the conditions listed above and the average of the perc rate results performed by the contracted geotechnical engineer (included in Appendix A) at the 3'-3.5' level of 6.45 minutes per inch (mpi), this engineer selects an ISDS incorporating trenches w{infiltrator chambers. A minimum 1,000 gallon septic tank is required to retain expected effluent volumes for 36 hours. A combination of level tee's or a distribution box with two outlets to absorption trench laterals will be necessary (see site plan and absorption field drawing in Appendix A). System design: Calculations: Average daily waste flow (ADF) for 6 employees on 1 shift @ 20 gal./per employee per day; ADF = 6 x 20 = 120 gal/day Peak flow (Q) is 150% of the total ADF; Q = 1.5 x 120 =180 gal/day Design pert rate (t) = 6.45 mpi Absorption bed area (A); A = (Qx 4t)/5 ; where A = absorption field area A = (180 x 2.5397)/5= 91.42 sq.ft. Infiltrator `QUICKe = 10 sq.ft./unit equivalent per CO State & MCHD 91.4 / 10 = 9.14 units required; use 10 infiltrator units Trench (2) dimensions to be 22' length x 3' width with 5 chambers per trench. See sketch in Appendix A. System installation /operation: Installation general notes: • Installation contractor shall possess a valid license & be approved for the work by the Garfield County Health Department (GCHD). • Observe minimum distance requirements between components per GCHD. • Materials used for the ISDS shall be per GCHD regulations. • Installation of all components specified here in shall be per the latest edition of the GCHD regulations. • Refer to attached drawings and details during absorption field construction. • Exercise caution when placing replacement soils into level bed area. These soils must be placed on native soils that are not smeared nor compacted. All sewer lines, septic tanks, distribution lines, boxes and laterals shall be inspected by the design engineer and/or the appropriate Garfield County official prior to final cover. Operation general notes: • The absorption field area shall not be exposed to flooding, irrigation water, ponding, vehicle traffic, burrowing animals, deep rooted trees or shrubs, or any other condition that may alter the bed's design performance. Removal of sludge build-up should be performed every 3-4 years. System limitations: This ISDS design is limited in scope to the specific site identified above and to conditions assumed or provided by others. This engineer assumes no liabi 'ty for inaccurate information or conditions that vary from design assumption 1i above. Notify this engineer and/or the appropriate Garfield County offieia, i ed ely if actual site conditions differ from those assumed here in. If unsure of the installation requirements for a particular site, contact the local health department. Like conventional systems, the soil and site conditions must be approved prior to installation. Conduct a thorough site evalua- tion to determine the proper sizing and siting of the system before installation. Materials and Equipment Needed o Quick4Equalizer36 o Hole Saw Chambers o MultiPort End Caps o PVC Pipe and Couplings a Backhoe Ca Laser, Transit, or Level o Shovel and Rake o Tape Measure 0 Screwdriver or Knife 0 2 -inch Drywall Screws" n Screw Gun" • o Small ValveCover Box* 0 4 inch Cap for Inspection Port' rr Invert Adapter' " Optional These guidelines for construction machinery must be followed during installation: o Avoid direct contact with chambers when using construction equipment. Chambers require a 12 -inch minimum of compacted cover to support a wheel Coad rating of 16,000 lbs/axle or equivalent to an H-10 AASHTO load rating. to Only drive across the trenches when necessary. Never drive down the length of the trenches. o To avoid additional soil compaction, never drive heavy vehicles over the completed system. Excavating and Preparing the Site Note: As is the case with conventional systems, do not install the systems in wet conditions or in overly moist soils, as this causes machinery to smear the so/l. 1. Stake out the location of all trenches and lines Sot the elevations of the tank, pipe, and trench bottom. 2. Install sedimentation and erosion control measures. Temporary drainage swaleslberms may be installed to protect the site during rainfall events. 3. Excavate and level 2 -foot wide trenches with proper center - to -center separation, Verify that the trenches are level or have the prescribed slope. Note: Over excavate the trench width in areas where you are planning to contour. Page 2 4. Rake the bottom and sides if smearing has occurred while excavating. Remove any large stones and other debris. Do not use the bucket teeth to rake the trench bottom, Note: Raking to eliminate smearing is not necessary in sandy soils. In fine textured soils (silts and clays), avoid walking in Me trench to prevent compaction and loss of soil structure. 5. Verify that each trench is levet using a level, transit, or laser. Preparing the End Cap 1.With a screwdriver or utility knife start the tear -out seal at the appropriate diameter for the inlet pipe. The seal allows for a tight fit for 3 -inch, flinch SDR35, and 4 -inch SCH40 pipe. 2. Pull the tab on the tear -out seal to create an opening on the end cap. 3. Snap off the molded splash plate located on the bottom front of the end cap. 4. Install splash plate into the appropriate slots below the inlet to prevent trench bottom erosion. 5. Insert the inlet pipe into the end cap at the beginning of the trench. Extend the pipe into the end cap roughly 4 inches. (Screws optional.) Start tear -out seal. Pull tab on tear -out seal. Install splash plate. EMTO Insert inlet pipe. Installing the System 1. Chock the header pipe to be sure it is level or has the prescribed scope. 2. Set the invert height at 6, 9 or 10 inches as specified in the design from the bottom of the inlet. Note: Use the Invert Adapter to achieve a 9" or 10" invert height. 3. Place the inlet end of the first chamber over the back edge of the end cap. 4. Lift and place the end of the next chamber onto the previous chamber by holding it at a 45 -degree angle. Line up the chamber end between the connector hook and locking pin at the top of the first chamber. Lower it to the ground to connect the chambers. Note: When the chamber end is placed between the connector hook and locking pin at a 45 -degree angle, the pin will be visible from the back side of the chamber. Note.: The connector hook serves as a guide to ensure proper connection and does not add structural integrity to the chamberjoint. Broken hooks will not affect the structure or void the warranty. 5. Swivel the chamber on the pin to achieve the proper direction for the trench layout. Note: The chamber allows up to a 15 -degree .swivel in either direction at each joint. 6. Where the system design requires straight runs, use the StraightLock'" Tabs to ensure straight connections, To activate the tabs, pop the tabs up with your thumb and lock into place, 7. Continue connecting the chambers until the trench is completed Note: As chambers are installed, verify they are level or have the prescribed slope. 8. The last chamber in the trench requires an end cap. Lift the end cap at a 45 - degree angle and insert the L._ connector hook throughthe Attach end cap to chamber. opening on the top of the end cap. Applying firm pressure. 7,7 3 Place first chamber onto end cap, Connect the ch Activate StraightLock" Tabs. tower the end cap to the ground to snap it info place. Do not remove the tear -out seal. Note,' Use straight lengths of pipe with the MultiPort End Cap at the trench ends to create fitting -free looped ends. 9. To ensure structural stability, fill the sidewall area by pulling soil from the sides of the trench with a shovel. Start at the joints where the chambers connect. Continue backfilling the entire sidewall area, making sure the fill covers the louvers. 10. Pack down the fill by walking along the edges of the trench and chambers. This is an important step in assuring structural support. Note: In wet or clay soils, do not walk in the sidewalls. 11. Proceed to the next trench and begin with Step 1. Installing Optional inspection Ports 1. 1. With a hole saw, drill the pre -marked area in the top of the chamber to create a 4 -inch opening. 2. Set a cut piece of pipe of the appropriate length into the corresponding chamber's inspection port sleeve. Note: The sleeve will accommodate a 4 -inch SCH40 pipe. 3. Use two screws to fasten the pipe to the sleeve around the inspection port. 4. Attach a threaded cap or cleanout assembly onto the protruding pipe at the appro- priate height. 5. A small valve cover box may be used if inspection port is below the desired grade. Covering the System Before backfilling, the system must be inspected by a health officer or other official as required by State and local codes. Create an as -built drawing at this time for future records. 1. Backfill the trench by pushing fill material aver the chambers with a backhoe. Keep a minimum of 12 inches of compacted cover over the chambers before driving over the system. Note: Do not drive over system while backfilling in sand. Note: For shallow cover applications, you must mound 12 inches of soil over the system before driving over it, and then grade it back to 6 inches upon completion. 2. Itis best to mound several inches of soil over the finish grade to allow for settling. This also ensures that runoff water is diverted away from the system, 3. After the system is covered, the site should be seeded or sodded to prevent erosion. Note: If the .system is for new home construction, it is important to leave marking stakes along the boundary of the system. This will notify contractors of the site location so they will not cross it with equipment or vehicles. Page 3 infiltrator Systems, inc.
