Job No. 196 113
Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Residence, Lot F12, Aspen Glen,
Garfield County, Colorado.
Dear Mr. Pines:
As requested, Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the excavation at the
subject site on January 30 and February 6, 1996 to evaluate the soils exposed for
foundation support. The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation
design are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our
agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Michael Pines Builders Inc., dated
January 26, 1996. Chen -Northern, Inc., previously conducted a preliminary
geotechnical engineering study for the development and for the preliminary plat design
of Aspen Glen under their Job No. 4 112 92, dated December 20,1991 and May 28,
1993, respectively.
The proposed residence is a two story wood frame structure with a full basement.
Basement and garage floors will be slab -on -grade. The ground surface at the site is
relatively flat. Fill from overlot grading was observed on the lot. Spread footings
sized for an allowable bearing pressure of 3,500 psf and foundation walls designed for
a lateral earth pressure corresponding to an equivalent fluid weight of 45 pcf have been
assumed for support of the residence. The lot is not located in a subsidence area that
could require special foundation mitigation design.
At the time of our initial visit to the site, the excavation was in progress and cut in one
level at about 7 feet below the surrounding ground surface. The garage and northern
portion of the residence had not been excavated at this time. The abandoned Glenwood
Ditch that had been backfilled was observed through the center of the basement
excavation. The excavation was cut through the backfill exposing the natural gravels.
Upon our subsequent visit on February 6, 1996, the foundation excavation was
completed and had been cut in two levels from 2 1/2 to 7 feet below the adjacent
ground surface. About 6 to 12 inches of existing fill appeared to underlie the footing
trench excavation in the garage area. Aspen Earthmoving on-site was informed of the

fill observed and recommended to excavate to the natural gravels. The soils exposed in
the bottom of the basement excavation consisted of slightly silty sandy gravel with
cobbles and small boulders. The results of a gradation analysis performed on a sample
of the natural gravel (minus 6 -inch fraction) obtained from the site are presented on
Fig. 1. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly
moist to moist.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural gravel designed for an
allowable soil bearing pressure of 3,500 psf should be adequate for support of the
proposed residence. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous
walls and 2 feet for columns. Loose and disturbed soils and existing fill encountered at
the foundation bearing level within the excavation should be removed and the footings
extended down to the undisturbed natural gravel soils. Exterior footings should be
provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection.
Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span Iocal
anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 10 feet. Foundation
walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure
based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 45 pcf for backfill consisting of the
on-site granular soils (excluding rock larger than about 6 inches). A perimeter
foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic
pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. Structural fill placed
within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site soils, exclusive of topsoil and
oversized rock, compacted to at least 95 % of standard Proctor density at a moisture
content near optimum. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and
the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to
evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence.

This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or
better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater
than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions.
In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below
the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by
subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
If there are any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know.
Sincerely,
HEPWORTH - PAWLAK GEOTECHNICAL, INC.
