Cdoraao01601 303945.74M 303345 2363 Fe-_nwe December 7, 1989 Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Addition to Existing Residence, 5329 Road 100, Garfield County, Colorado. Job No. 4 167 90 As requested, Chen -Northern, Inc., observed the excavation at the subject site on November 17, 1989 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The work was done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Herman Anderson Construction, dated November 8, 1989. The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The main part of the addition (including a garage) is located on the southeast side of the existing residence. A small addition for a tub is located near the southwest corner of the existing home. The existing structure is a one-story stucco residence, which we understand was built in about 1965. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in multiple levels from 3 to 10 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The materials exposed in the bottom of the main excavation in the garage area consisted of large basalt boulders with a silty sand and gravel matrix. The materials exposed in the excavation for the tub area consisted of slightly organic sandy clayey silt with gravel. Results of swell -consolidation testing performed on a soil sample taken from the tub area are shot -in on Fig. 1 and indicate that the soils are moderately compressible and will settle when wetted. A summary of laboratory testing is shown on Table I. No free water was observed in the excavation. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, we recommend the proposed addition be founded with spread footings on the undisturbed natural basalt boulders and matrix material designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2000 psf. Footings designed for a soil bearing pressure of 1000 psf can be placed on the gravelly silt in the tub area provided the risk of. settlement is understood by the owner and accounted for in the design of the foundation. The settlement risk will be mainly due to wetting of the silts. As an alternative, the excavation in the tub area can be lowered to reduce the settlement risk. Since sub- surface exploration was not performed, we do not know the depth of the soft Heenan Anderson Construction December 7, 1989 Page 2 material or the total settlement• potential of footings placed on the silt. Footings shou3d be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate :over above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span an unsupported length of at least 10 feet. Areas of loose or soft material (or existing fill) encountered at the foundation bearing level within the excavation should be removed and the footings extended down to adequate natural bearing material or the loose material can be moistened and compacted to 95% of the standard Proctor density under footings. Footing grade can be reestablished with crushed rock in areas where voids have formed due to boulder removal. A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation. Since we did not conduct subsurface exploration, we have assumed the conditions observed in the excavation represent those within the depth of influence of the foundation. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
