Subject: AFM R·Control™ Building Panels. 11. Description: A. General: AFM R·Control™ panels are factory as· sembled, sandwich panels consisting of waferboard facings with expan- ded polystyrene (EPS) cores. The panels are for use as load-bearing walls and roof or floor components. Panels are 4 feet to 28 feet in length and from 8 feet to 1 O feet in height. Ten-foot-high panels are limited to 8-foot widths. Panel core thicknesses range from 3112 to 11 1/4 inches. Panel fac- ing thicknesses range from 31, inch to 314 inch, depending on load require- ments. Maximum core.thic<ness for wall panels is 7114 inches. Waferboard panels are recognized in NER-108 and are bonded to the EPS core with Structural grade urethane adhesive cured under pressure. The EPS core is minimum 0.95 pcf density modified polystyrene insula- tion board identified as Type I AFM Certified EPS (Report No. 4169). B. Installation: The A-Control panels are connected to each other with factory-cut wood splines that are field coated with an EPS-compatible wood-to-wood bonding adhesive. Splines are also fastened to panels with Bd box nails at .6 inches on center or an approved system justified to pro- vide equivalent or higher shear strength properties. Top and bottom plates are dimensional lumber, sized to match the core thickness. and secured to the panel core and facings with adhesive and 8d box nails at 6 inches on centers. An EPS-compatible latex caulk is applied along the bottom of the panel base plate prior to placement. Typical installation details are in Figures Nos. 1 and 2. Structural calcu- lations must be provided to substantiate details unique to each project C. Loading: Allowable transverse, axial, combined axial and transverse, and racking shear loads are set forth in Tables Nos. I, II and Ill. D. Openings: Openings up to 48 inches in width are permitted for door and window installations. Panel openings must be positioned to provide a minimum I-foot header depth and minimum 3-foot jamb width on both sides of the opening. See Figure No. 2. Allowable uniform header loads are in Table No. II. All other conditions must be justified to the building official's satisfac- tion. E. Thermal Barrier: One-half-inch-thick regular gypsum wallboard is fastened to the interior face of A-Control panels with 5d gypsum wallboard nails in accordance with Table No. 47-G of the code. using 16 inches on center framing spacing guidelines. F. Panel Cladding: 1. Roof Covering: The roof covering must comply with Chapter 32 of the code except that roofs with hot-asphalt or hot-coal tar pitch require mechanical attachment of a base ply prior to their applica- tion. Attachment of base ply shall be made with No. 11 gauge ring-shank nails driven through tin caps or approved nails with integral caps. Fasten- ers must have sufficient length to penetrate through the top panel skin. A single layer of base sheet is applied at the low point, lapping each course over the proceeding one 3 inches, minimum. Laps are nailed at 9 inches on center.'Within the field of the base sheet, two rows of fasteners spaced 12 inches on center are installed with nails in these rows spaced 18 inches on center and staggered from adjacent rows. Underlayments and flash- ings are installed in accordance with the code. 2. Wall Covering: Wall coverings may be any recognized in the code. Panels are considered weather-resistive barriers and do not require build- ing paper except where cementitious plaster is used. See Section 4706(d) of the code. All panel joints must be sealed with a compatible acrylic latex caulk. G. One-hour Fire-resistive Wall Assembly: A-Control wall panels, with a 311,, 51/2 and 7114 -inch-thick core, and minimum 7/,6 -inch-thick wafer- board facings with double 51,-inch ,Type X gypsum wallboard on each face are considered one-hour fire-resistive wall assemblies. The double layers of gypsum wallboard are installed vertically with the base layer placed over the panel with vertical joints staggered 16 inches minimum from panel joints. As a single woman with limited financial resources, I am not able to, like the other parcel holders ~long the ridge, maintain a home elsewhere while paying for the land. I do not have the luxury of waiting for the area to be "developed" with improved roads and electricity. I must pioneer the region and build now or forfeit my dream. I am building an efficient 600 sq. ft., one bedroom, one bath dwelling with R-control panels and I'm utillzlng as many alternative energy sources as possible. Because the cost of running electricity to the land has been estimated by Holy Cross Electric at plus $25,000, I will power my home by generator until I can install a photovoltaic system. After talking with Shelton Drilling and hearing stories from property owners in the area, ground water ls not an available commodity. The Shelton's claim they have never dug a producing well along the cliffs and Rev. Brown who owns the adjoining 80 acres dug a well which occasionally produced for about a year before going dry. Because of this, I plan to haul water in and store 1t ln an 1100 gallon tank. I've chosen a fairly large holding tank for a single person dwelling because there are times of the year (particularly "mud" season) when negotiating a water truck up the road would be treacherous. Because the hauling of water ls a difficult and expensive task I have designed my home for mlnlmal water usage by not installing a washing machine or dishwasher and by using water only for drinking, cooking and bathing. I plan to recycle my grey water through a double-compartment tank for use in irrigating a garden. I will be installing water-saving faucets and showerhead purchased through the Roaring Fork Energy Center and, with your permission, would like to install a composting toilet. It would eliminate wasting precious water on a flush toilet and would alleviate dumping waste into septic systems and ultimately leaching it into the earth. I feel much more environmentally conscious by composting my waste Into a tray of fertilizer which ls emptied once a year lnto the garden. ... --------------------------- • • " Because I live alone and have a propens1ty to 1solat1on and because forty hours of my week is spent at work, there would be low usage of the composting toilet with little threat of occasional overflow. But to safeguard against overflow a drain pit would be installed to local regulations. I have enclosed information on the toilet I have selected, including its specs and the specs for the drainpit. At the request of Art Hoagland I .am submitting this request for your review in hopes that permission will be granted and I can proceed with building and consequently taking up residency on my land. I have enclosed information on the compost toilet, a copy of the property description and a rough map of the land. Thank you for your time in this matter and if there are any further questions I may be reached at home at 927-3773 or at work at Aspen Valley Hospital, 544-1161. Sincerely, eanne'Soulsby Box 1148 Basalt, Co. 81621 COMPOSTING TOILETS THE ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTION "SUN-MAR" composting toilets use the natural processes of decomposi- tion and evaporation to recycle human waste. By recycling toilet waste in th;s way, NO SEPTIC SYSTEMS, NO HOLDING TANKS, and NO CHEMICALS are required. "SUN-MAR" toilets do not break the cycle of nature, nor do they have the inconveniences of the old outhouse. HOW IT WORKS Like the compost heap in the garden, '•SuN-MAR" composting toilets allow human waste, toilet paper and organic material to break down through a natural process. Heat, oxygen, moisture and organic material are needed for microbes to transform human waste into good fertilizing soil. Heat is generated by the compost and/or heating element. Oxygen is provided by the ventilation system. Organic material is introduced by adding peat moss. The waste entering the toilet is approximately 901Jf. water content, which is evaporated and carried up the vent stack. The remaining material is transformed into an inoffensive earth-like substance. WINTER USE Because 11 8UN-MAR" makes its units out of fi.breglass and high grade stainless steel, freezing temperatures will NOT damage the toilet. Composting action, however, decreases as the temperature drops, so extended winter use requires that the toilet be kept at a minimum temperature of about 60°F ( 15°C) and the vent pipe be well insulated. For periodic use in winter, the toilet may be used as a 'holding tank', until the compost warms up and the inicrob'es emerge from dormancy. TROPIC -· 1. Vent pipe 1-112" 2. The rotation and aeration by the BIO-DRUM or shaft- mixers, along with the addition of organic material, ensures a fast, odorless, aerobic breakdown of the compost. MAINTENANCE 0 Sun-Mar" toilets need a minimum of maintenance. All that needs to be added is a cup of peat moss per person per day, plus, if avail- able, some other organic materials such as vegetable cuttings and greens. Some warm water should also be added if the compost is too dry. The compost needs to be aerated and mixed once every third day while the toilet is in use. This is simply done by giving the han- dle a few turns (on Bio-Drum models) or by turning the shaftmixers (on the TROPIC). In cottage use, some composted material is usually removed once a year. In residential applications, compost has to be extracted more often, dep·eildin_~ on use. This residual compost is the best garden fertilizer you. can get. The WCM, X.L. and ... N.E. incorporate the revolutionary Bio- Drum which provides the optitnum environment for biological break- down with its superior aeration and mixing action, while reducing the maintenance ·r·eqUirement to a minimum by simply turning the externally mounted handle. The door on the Bio-Drum closes and opens automatically when the drum is rotated. To remove compost, release the drum lock and turn the handle in a counter clockwise direction. The compost will rapidly fall into the draw- er below. To empty, simply pull out.thC drawer (no tools and no screws). The mixing system on the TROPIC model comprises a leveller to spread the compost and 2 shaftmixers providing mixing and aeration. " 2. Bowl liner (removable) 3. Tiolet top 4. Main Shell 5.
