SI'l'E CXH>ITICJNS 'Ihe proposed construction site is urxlistw::bed and relatively flat pasture land between U.S. Highway 6 & 24 and O:.iunty Road 225. Vegetation consists mostly of native grasses although the prq;iert:y has a relatively sparse growth tcw.ird the northwest. A very slight natural~ to the southeast and only about 1 to 2 feet in elevation difference exists across the site. several irrigation ditches cross the general area. One of these ditches borders the west edge of the lot, 'Ihe ditches contained water at the t.ime of our field work and the irrigation season had reportedly just begun. 'Ihe field exploration for the project was con:ructed on May 4, 1990. Two exploratory borin;Js were drilled at the locations shewn on Fig. 1 to evaluate the subsurface corrlitions. 'lhe borin;Js were advanced with 4-inch diaJneter ('hen~ Northern. Inc. -3- continuous flight augers powered by a truck-nount.ed C>IE-55 drill rig. '!he borin;Js were logged by a representative of Cllen--Northern, Inc. Sarrples of the subsoils were taken with a 2-:inc:h I.D. spoon sanQ.Jler. '!he sanQ.Jler was driven into the subsoils at various depths with blc::MS from a 140~ hammer fallin;J 30 in:hes. 'lhis test is similar to the standard penetration test descril:ied by AS'IM Method 0-1586. '!he penetration resistance values are an indication of the relative aenSity or consist.ency Of the subsoils. Depths at which the sanples were taken arxi the penetration resistance values are sh= on the Logs of Exploratory Borin;Js, Fig. 2. '!he sanples were returned to our laboratory for review by the project en;Jineer arxi testin;J. '!he subsoil conditions encamtered at the site are shCMTI graphically on Fig. 2. '!he subsoils consist of up to 1/2 foot of topsoil overlying a shall(1.ll depth of na.iium stiff, na.iium plastic clays. '!he clays overlie loose silty to clayey san:'ls at depths of 1 to 4 1/2 feet. 'lhe san:'ls exten:l to 16 1/2 feet in Borin;J 1 where clays arxi silts were encamtered which exterxied to 21 feet depth. At Borin;J 2, the san:'ls existed to the full depth explored, 11 feet. laboratory testin;J pertonood on sanples ootainOO from the borin;Js included standard properties arxi swell-consolidation potential. Results of swell- oonsolidation tests, shC1im on Fig. 4, indicate that the natural soils have a IOOderately high settlement potential uroer light to m:xierate load a00. wetting. Floor slab =trol joints should be used to reduce damage due to shrinkage craoldn:J. A thin layer of fine gravel may be placed beneath slabs to facilitate construc- tion.
