The Novan Optima II collector series introduces a new
standard of collector design. Its streamlined appearance and
high performance make ii the choice of discerning solar
professionals. Each panel is anodized in a bronze color to
provide an attractive. durable, scratch-resistant surface.
The two piece extruded aluminum frame offers maximum
strength, minimum weight, and excellent integrity against
unwanted air or moisture intrusion. The glazing cap strip is
easily removed from the face of the collector, allowing
access to the interior of the panel or the glazing without
removing the collector from operation.
Structural mounting is made simple and secure by the
integral mounting channel. A Novan innovation, the channel
accepts a 3/8 bolt or jam nut which can then be moved to
any point around the perimeter of the collector. This allows
extremely secure mounting connections without penetrating
the collector in any way. Novan's complete, pre-packaged
mounting systems combine with the mounting channel to
make even the most difficult mounting situations simple and
secure. The attractive mounting hardware is made up of
bronze-anodized aluminum and black-oxidized stainless
steel hardware_
The absorber plate in an Optima II collector is entirely
copper for excellent heat transfer, total fluid compatibility, and
many years of reliable performance. Riser tubes are spaced
two inches apart to maximize efficiency and brazed into one
inch flow-through headers. This absorber configuration
results in a very low pressure drop, while minimizing field-
installed piping around the collectors. Rugged EPDM seals
isolate the copper absorber from the aluminum frame. absorb
expansion, and prevent unwanted infiltration_
Two absorber coatings are available: non-selective black
paint and selective black chrome_ In general, the
electroplated black chrome coating is the most appropriate
due to its superior thermal performance.
Optima II collectors are glazed with low-iron tempered
glass which is textured to reduce reflected glare. This glass
adds an extra measure of safety and performance. A one-
piece EPDM gasket surrounds the glass, providing a
complete, reliable seal.
If desired, installed collectors can be surrounded with
Novan's collector trim kits_ Anodized a bronze color to match
the collector frames, these are used to conceal mounting
hardware and piping_ The trim kits give the appearance of
collectors flashed into a roof, without the difficulty and
potential liability of such an approach.
All Optima collectors are covered by a full ten-year
warranty, including parts, labor and shjpping, against defects
in material and workmanship. A standard three year warranty
covers corrosion of the absorber plate, unless the collector is
installed with a Navan Optimizer module and charged with
Brayco 888 heat transfer fluid. In this case. the collector is
covered by a full ten-year warranty against corrosion. Please
refer to the actual warranty, available upon request.

was .61 GPM (37SC, 38SC), .88 GPM (48SC), or
1.11 GPM (410SC, 68SC) of water. Performance
values calculated for!!.!!! aperture area are:
FR ra = .823 FAUL= .957 (37SC, 38SC)
FR Ta = .823 FA UL = 849 ( 48SC)
FR ra = .839 FAUL= .811 (410SC. 68SC)
The incidence angle modifier, K aT, describes
the decrease in efficiency of a collector at non-
zero incidence angles. K aT varies with incidence
angle according to the equation:
K aT=b0( __ 1_-1)
cos8
where b 0 = incidence angle modifier constant and
H =incidence angle.
The incident angle modifier constant b0, for this
collector is -.192 (37SC. 38SC) or -.234 (48SC,
410SC. 68SC). The time constant is a measure of
the time required for the collector to respond to
changes on solar radiation level or inlet
temperature. The measured time constant for the
Optima II collectors is 1.4' minutes (37SC, 38SC),
.87 minutes (48SC) or 1.24 minutes (410SC, 68SC).

The FXB1 OOOSD is designed to suit both
hot water heating applications, as well as the
heating of spas or hot tubs. The
FXB 1 OOOSD replaces Novan's very popular
Optimizer module, the SMSD. This module
features two very efficient heat exchangers
in a compact package that is easy to install
and service. Once again, Novan. the leader
in pre-packaged system technology, offers
the most advanced module for a dual-load
application available on the market.
WARRANTY
This module is covered by a FULL five-year
warranty. This covers parts. labor, and
shipping costs. For a copy of the warranty,
please contact your local Novan
representative.
DESIGN
The module is of closed loop design to
provide reliable freeze protection in all
climates. A highly efficient, insulated, tube-in-
tube copper heat exchanger is used for
domestic hot water. This exchanger features
double-augmented heat transfer surfaces
which dramatically improve module
pertormance. Two walls and a leak detection
passage are provided between the solar fluid
and the potable water to help meet all local,
state, and federal safety code requirements.
In areas with hard water, the exchanger is
easily cleaned with a liquid cleaner by using
the shut-off valves and cleaning ports
provided.
The spa heat exchanger is of the same
double-wall. double-augmented design. It is
constructed of copper-nickel for corrosion
resistance and compatibility with solar
transfer fluids as well as chlorinated spa
water.
The circulators are of the enclosed rotor
design and require no lubrication. The solar
circulator is of cast iron construction, while
the potable water circulator is of bronze
construction. (Notice that a pump or diverting
valve for spa water is provided by the
installer.)
The fully automatic dual load controller
constantly monitors the temperature
difference between the collectors and the
DHW tank and the spa. The user chooses
which load is to have priority and dials the
temperature desired for each load. The
system will heat the first load until the
desired temperature is met and then
changes modes to heat the second load. If
the first load falls below its desired
temperature, the system automatically moves
back into the first load's mode and returns
the first load to the desired temperature. If
both loads reach the temperatures set on
their dials. the system automatically moves
into the DHW mode and heats the DHW
storage up to an ultimate high temperature of
180°F. The control cabinet, including the
three digit temperature ?isplay. includes a
ten foot, low voltage cable for remote
mounting.
l
Installation of a Novan dual load system is
simple because the wall-mounted module
provides the correct arrangement of heat
exchangers, pumps, expansion tank, check
valve, fill and drain fittings, diverting valve,
pressure relief valves, pressure gauge and
differential thermostat for the application. The
quick-connect fill and drain fittings allow easy
charging of the solar loop while providing
tamper-proof protection while the module is
in operation.
Unique pressure-temperature plugs are
provided at the inlet and outlet of both sides
of both heal exchangers. This feature allows
the installer to determine flow rates and
facilitates easy trouble-shooting. All
components are carefully selected for long,
trouble-free service and compatiblity with a
variety of heat transfer fluids, including glycol
and synthetic hydrocarbon oil.
MODULE APPL/CATION
The FXB1 OOOSD is designed to yield
outstanding performance with up to five
Novan Series 98SC solar collectors. Consult
the factory or your local Novan
representative for pipe sizing assistance and
design details for your application. The
application charts on the reverse indicate the
"correction factor" ( 1 ) for a variety of
system configurations. This factor should be
as high as possible.

Water has the highest specific heat and lowest cost; however, it has a limited temperature range (32-200°F).
Ethylene glycol-water mixtures have wider temperature capability, but toxicity and poor high temperature
performance create problems. Propylene glycol-water mixtures have extremely poor high temperature
performance and causes copper corrosion problems. Silicones are extremely high cost and exhibit low specific
heat. Aromatic mineral oils cannot be used at high temperatures because of oxidation and corrosion and they
attack asphalt shingles very readily. Na_p~thenic mineral oils have only moder~te high temperat
0
ure capability and(A
also will attack asphalt shingles. Paraffin1c mineral oils have high freezing points ( + 10 to+ 15 F). 'W
BRAYCO • 888 combines most of the good features of all other fluids without any substantial compromise in
performance, BUT IS LOWER IN COST.
