Jlit1e Commetclal e.emer, Garfield c.ounty, Colorado. Dear Mr. Bishop: As~ Hepworth-Pawlak Geotedmical, Inc. (H-P Gcotech) has designed an Individual Sewage Disposal Sysian (ISDS) for the proposed commcn:ial building on the Southeastern Lot at tbe Rifle Commercial Centi:r loca&cd on H"ighway 6 and 24. We understand that the COl1lD1l!rcia1 buildinc has one toilet and one sink, and will be used by a~ of tell~-W.ier will be supplied to the building by a well located on Lot 1. The 1e1t boles (nominal B to 9 incbcs in diamctiCr by 18 ( Fiank Bishop COllltruetion, Inc. June 30, 2003 Page2 inches deep) were hand dug and were soaked a minimum of 8 hours prior to testing. The soils exposed in the Profile Pit consist of a Andy ID vmy sandy, stiff to medium stiff, moist, brown clay. The soils eiqiosed in lhc pen:olation test holes were similar to those elll>Osed in the Profile Pit. The percolation tests were pedonned at depths ranging from 19 IO 22 inches below ground surface. The percolation holes were filled on Jwie 19, 2003 and allowed to soalt for approximalely 24 hours prior to the n:tum of our field peflOIUlel to begin the percolation tests. The water level in the holes dropped slightly durini that 24 hour lime period. The percolalioll tests wen: abandoned after om hour and no Waler level decrease was ddected. Groundwater was observed at 2.5 feet below ground surface. The day soil does oot appear to accept waaer from the percolation test due to -the very slow percoJation rare and nearly salllrlted. swe. Sewage VaUlt: A concrete single chambervalt with a niininwm volume of 1,000 gallons will be uaed for storage of sewage from the proposed commercial buildinc. The tank will be equipped with two floall wiled to a control panel which should be located on or in the propoted buildinc wbae it will be readily sem and heard. The lower float should be sec to activaae the high waacr alatm in the ~ntrol panel when the vault is 115$ full. The high float will be used to signal the control panel ta shut off the water supply valve to the .residence when the vailt is 9't; full. A vault with a volume greater dian 1,000 gallons should be ~red. We understand the occupancy of the building during bulineu hours may be between 1 IOd 10 employees. We have estimaSed that each employee will genetate approximately 15 pllons of Wl5leWltel' per penon per day. As shown In Table 1, a l,<XX) gallon tank could 611 in as little u 7 days. We recommend the use of a J ,SOO gallon &in&le compartment aepdc raalc followed by a sec:ond 1, ~gallon single conyaib11t11t tank wtlich colllains a hich water float alarm sysran. 403 218 cNC• •• ,. . .. Dear Mr. Bishop: As requested, Hcpwonh-Pawlak Geoteclmical, Inc. (H-P Geotech) has observed the Installation of the Individual Sewage Disposal System at the subject site on July 24, 2003. The design of the system was presented in our report dated June 30, 2003, Job No. 403 218. Indiviclual Sewage Disposal System Components: Insrallation of the system includes a concrete single chamber lSOO-gallon sewage vault followed by a second concrete single chamber !,~gallon sewage vault. The second tank was equipped with two floats wired to an Orenco Syste:ns control panel which is located in the bathroom of the building where it can be readily seen and heard. The lower float has been set to activate the high water allUlll in the control panel when the vault is approximately 8.S % full. The high float is used to signal the control panel to activate a Jandy VJM2 motorized valve to shut off the water supply when the vault is 95% full. A manual ball valve was in.stalled in lhe main water supply pipe. Septic Tank Buoyancy: Shallow groundwater was observed in the tank excavation on lune 19, 2003 by a representative of H-P Geoteeh at about 2.S feet below ground surface. We 'Understand ihat groundwater was a1 a seasonal hi&h due to flooding of the irrigation ditch adjacent ui' the site at the time of our visit. The tanks have been Glenwood Springs 970-945-7988 • Pa:ker 303-841-7119 • Colorado Springs 719-633-5562 l d 66~Q·ON D31038 dH ~dlO S SOOl v d 9S • • Fnnk Bishop Construction, Inc. August 7, 2003 ~e2 installed with the top of the lid at irade and wlll have 2 feet of soil cover over them when site grading is completed. We did not observe any soil cover over lhe tanks at the time of our visit. Our calculations indicate that 2 feet of soil cover is adequate to reduce the risk of the vault becoming buoyant when pumped. Soil mounded above the tank should be sloped at 3 horizontal to 1 vertical (3H: 1 V) to prevent soil erosion. Without the soil cover, a 11,400 pound deficit (per tanlc) exists. Concrete dcadmcn could also be used ID make up this deficit Based on our observation, it is our opinion that the system has been installed in accordance with Colorado Department of Health Guidelines on Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations Revised 2000 and our design.
