Carbondale, Colorado 81623
Su~iect: Subsurface Investigation and OWS Repair Design, Existing Residence
0087 Apache Drive, Town ofNew Castle
Garfield County, Colorado
Job No. I 5955
Mr. Francello,
As requested, we have investigated subsurface conditions and designed a repair onsite wastev.iater system
(OWS) for the existing residence. The subsurfilce investigation was performed on September 3, 2003.
SITE CONDIDONS
The lot is located in a rural residential area in Garfield CO\lllty, Colorado, where OWS are require& The
proposed drain field area has a 300/o to 35% slope to the east There is a sparse cover of native grasses and
weeds-with scattered juniper.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A fuur-bech oom residence, septic tl!ak; and drywell· exist at the locations presented· on Figure I . It is
anticipated that the existing septic tank will have to be abandoned; however, if the tank is found to be in
good condition and is a minimum of 1250-gallons irr si=witlr1wo· compartments; the tank may be used· for
this design. The existing diywell must be abandoned. In accordance with the Individual Sewage Disposal
System (ISDS} regulations, the average· sewage loading for JI: four-bedroom residence is 600 Gallons fer
Day (GPD) and 900 GPD with a l.5 peaking factor. This loading includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder,
and washing machine. Water is provided to the residence by the local water district.
SUBSURFACECONDIDONS
The subsurface investigation was performed a by digging three percolation holes, 44 to 52 inches deep, and
one test pit at the locations indicated on Figure 2. Subsurface materials in the test pit consisted of 2 feet of
silty, sandy clay underlain by intensely weathered shale bedrock to the maximum depth explored of7.5 feet.
No ground water or bedrock was encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 14 to 40
minutes per inch (MPD. The average percolation rate is 25 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table 1.
RECO:MMENDA TIONS
The installation must include a septic tank, an effluent filter, and a gravelless chamber-trench drain
field at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of
600 GPD and a percolation rate of 25 MPI. The installation must include a 1250-gallon, two-
compartment, septic tank with an effluent tilter on the outlet and three chamber-trenches using serial
overflow distribution. Each trench must have one row of I 0 chambers for a total of 30 chambers and

465 f\2 of infiltrative area. Trenches must be installed no deeper than 3.5 feet. The trenches may be
modi£ed to confonn to topography and to preserve as much vegetation as possible. Jt is understood a
plastic septic tank will be used because of access at the site. Plastic tanks must be bedded with pea
gravel to the tank outlet and filled with water as the tank is being backfilled to reduce distortion of the
tank. If the existing septic is used an effluent filter must be added to the outlet.
Movement over the drain field trench during construction should be kept at a minimum to reduce
compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of each trench must be scarified with a pick, shovel, or
backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition-of chambers.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service and nmst assume the responsibility
for maintenance of the OWS. The system is relatively maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic
tanks pumped. In the absence-of a-111011it01iug program, the septic tank should be pumped and the effi\tent
filter deaned every two years. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other nonbiode-
gradable material into the OWS. Water U8C must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run·when seals
malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can consume in excess of l 000 GPO. A loading of 1000
GPD could flood and irreparably hann the OWS.
The loading from the backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should
be constructed fur the back-wash waste, if a softener is installed. Chenllcally treated water from a swi1muing
pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIMITATIONS
Arr OWS design-requires installntion by n licemed· contractor. Our investigation, layout, design and rect)m-
mendations are based on data submitted. If conditions different from those described in this report are
encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health departm, ent
modifies this design. we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the pe:rfonnance of the OWS.
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requiremC\)ts.
septic tank consn1Jction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to confonn to
the requirements of the TSDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the LSDS regulations and requirements.
Ifthere are questions or if we can be of further service, please call.

As requested, the installation of the onsite wastewater system for the subject site was observed on
November 4, 2003. The system was designed under Job No. 15955, dated September 10, 2003.
The system includes the installation of a 1250-gallon, two-compai1ment, plastic septic tank with an
effluent filter on the outlet, and three gravelless chamber-trenches each with 1 row of 10 chambers for a
total of 465 square feet of infiltrative lll'ea. Serial overflow lines were installed at the end of the first two
trenches. An as-built drawing is included as Figure 1. The trench was completed, but the new sewer line
and cleanout had not been installed at the time of the observation.
The observed components of the OWS were installed m general confonnance with the design. The
installation observation does not imply a guarantee or warranty of materials or workmanship.
