To: Garfield County Building and Sanitation Department 108 8th Street, Suite 201 Glenwood Springs, Colorado 8160 l From: Eric F. Mangeot, PE 1521 Bennett Ave. Glenwood Springs. Colorado 81601 Date: April 23, 2004 Re: Individual Sewage Disposal System Application for ~ "!.'11'l TBD NoName Lane, Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601 To Whom It May Concern: The following infonnation summmizes the site evaluation and design of the individual sewage disposal system for TBD NoName Lane, Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601. 1n addition to the application, a map to the property, a site map, as well as vendor infonnation is attached. 1. Overview and Introduction The most common way to treat and dispose of wastewater generated from rural homes is through the use of an onsite disposal system. Onsite disposal systems are typically a septic tank followed by a leach field. 1n the case of the single family residence located at To Be Determined (TBD) NoName Lane, Glenwood Springs, Colorado, 81601, the onsite disposal system followed by a chamber system configured in a bed. A site map to the property is attached as Figure 1. A chamber system is a gravelless pipe system that is approved for use in Garfield County, Colorado. One advantage of chamber systems is the lack of soil masking. Since there is no rock in the trench, the soil is not covered, so eftluent can be absorbed by the entire soil surface. It is estimated that septic rocks typically cover approximately 50 perceot of the bottom area of a treoch. Therefore, if a system has no septic rock, potentially 50 percent more soil is available to treat the effiuent. Chamber systems are also lightweight, easy to install, and have an open bottom. Four (4) bedrooms are to be constructed at the residence. A garbage disposal is not proposed to be installed at the residence. 2. Site Evaluation Site characteristics ultimately constrain the method of disposal, therefore a site evaluation was conducted at the site to determine a proper method of disposal. 2.1 Estimate of Wastewater Flow Based on the long-term expected number of people to be living in the residence, the projected wastewater flow from the residence is estimated to be between 300 and 400 gallons per day. 2.2 Inftaent Wastewater Flow Characteristics BOD5 Calculation: 0.22 lbs/capita/day x 4.0 capita/lot= 0.88 lbs BODs/day PAaP 1 nf1 . . Total Suspended Solids (TSS): 0.25 lbs/capita/day x 4.0 capita/lot= 1.00 lbs/day. After preliminary treatment in the septic tank, TSS levels should be approximately 40 mg/L. 2.3 Soil Classification Based on the test pit excavated at the disposal site, the soils consist of silty sandy gravel with cobbles. 2.4 Percolation Tests Three (3) percolation holes were constructed and tested in accordance with the Garfield County, Building and Sanitation Department (County) requirements on April 6 and 7, 2004. The percolation rates averaged 12 minutes and 26 seconds (13 minutes). Because the test hole no. I ran faster than the other two holes, the test was reran 8 hours later. Similar percolation rate results occurred and the more conservative of the two values is used and considered more representative of site based on the soil classification. 3.0 Proposed Individual Sewage Disposal System All constructed components and appurtenances associated with the fudividual Sewage Disposal System have been designed to meet or exceed County standards. The NoName water system wells are over 1,500 feet away at the confluence of NoName Creek and the Colorado River. The Rock Gardens water system is located several hundred feet away. The closest waterway is an irrigation ditch located on the English Subdivision Exemption. This irrigation ditch is located is located approximately 70 feet from the nearest property line, which is located approximately 130 feet away from the disposal field. 3.1 Septic Tank According to County regulations, a 4-bedroom home is recommended to have a minimum of 1,250 gallons. Therefore, 1,250-gallon septic tank is proposed. The proposed location of the septic tank is shown on Figure 2. 3.2 Disposal Field (Chamber System) Based upon an average percolation rate of 13 minutes, no garbage disposal system, and a bed configuration, the County requires that 29 chamber system pipe segments be installed. The proposed disposal field bed will be constructed with 6 rows of 5 Equalizer 36™ (for a total of 30) chamber pipes as shown on Figure 2. Sufficient land area is provided for the proposed number of bedrooms and both proposed and reasonably anticipated. V ender information for fufiltrator is included with the application. 3.3 As-Constructed System Figure 2 will be updated and submitted to the County to reflect the as-constructed system at the residence based on dimensions taken during construction observations and final inspection. Page 2 of3 .. 3.4 Future Considerations There is sufficient land area further to die south to consttuct an entire new absorption system or add on to die proposed absorption system in the future. The septic tank will be inspected annually and pwnped when neccssazy. Eric F. Mangcot, a licensed engineer in die State of Colorado, prepared this Application. An as-constructed site map is attached. 1.0 As-Constructed Individual Sewage Disposal System All constructed components and appurtenances associated with the ISDS have been designed to meet or exceed County standards. The ISDS was installed on April 27 through April 29, 2004. Construction observations and inspections were made at critical points of the installation which included the following a) Completed excavation of the bed; b) inspection of each portion of the bed prior to backfill; c) septic tank installation; and d) completion. 1.1 Septic Tank According to County regulations, a 4-bedroom home is recommended to have a minimum of 1,250 gallons. A 1,500-gallon septic tank was installed because the 1,250-gallon storage tank was not readily available. The final location of the septic tank is shown on Figure I. 1.2 Disposal Field (Chamber System) The as-constructed field bed consisted of 5 rows of 6 Equalizer 36™ (for a total of 30) chamber pipes as shown on Figure I. 6 rows of 5 were originally proposed, however, the design was altered for the protection of existing trees . .§?' < -2" s ::::.
