It is our urukrstandlna that Garfield County permitted the OWS and has requested an evaluation of the as-built conditions of the owner-built system. Sopris Engine&ring inspected the ncavations and the installation of system components prior to final backfill. The system was constructed under Garlield County Permit 3934 and built to serve the needs of the newly constructed 2-bedroom house. The system is siad to serve up to a 4-bedroom population. Soprls Engineering was contacted reprdlng the relatively fast perc:olation rates determined by the County official. Wo recommended that a minimum of 6" of concrete sand be placed at the bottom of the trench excavations underlying the leaching chambers. The sand layer provides for even disllibution and enhanced treatment of the effluent. The as built conditions and installation of the new OWS components Is In compliance with the permit specifications and OWS design guidelines for a 4-bedroom home. A lSOO·gallon dual compartment concrete septic tank was installed with appropriate sanitary tees and an effi11ent filter in the outlet tee. The absorption field was constructed with a total of 27 EQ-36 leaching chambers in a trench configuration consisting of 3 trenches with 9 chambers eac)I. The chambers were backfilled with native soil. Each trench was installed level. Inspection ports were installed on each corner end cham.ber. The chambers were inslalled in •uitable soils consistent across the field. Obsetvetions of the soils within the field were performed during construction indicating that the soils are consistent with previous observations and consist of lfl. foot of topsoll overlying 4.5 feet of silty clayey sand overlying silty sandy gravel and cobbles to an observed depth of 9 feet. Groundwater was not encountered in the excavations. Garfield County Bullding Deputmcmt has performed percolation testing at the site on March 29, 2005. The results Indicate a fut percolation rate of 3.75 minutes per inch however the observation of tho soils indicate the presents of scattered cobbles and gravel in a relatively tight soil matrix that may exhibit fluctnatlons ln the actual percolation rate. Therefore the placement of a 6" sand layer below the leaching chambers was recommended by Sopris Bnginoering to mitigate the fast percolation rate and the presence. Effluent is distributed to the field through a distribution manifold with individual distribution lines to each trench. The manifold was installed level acro.'!11 the width of the field. The construction was completed utilizing appropriate materials installed according to typical design guidelines. ·The minimum setback distances have been maintained. ows Overation pd Maintgpg All components of the OWS shall be inspected on a regular basis and be properly maintained. The re e.~tablishment of vegetative cover over the field and responsibility for inspection and maintenance of the system will remain with the Lot Owner or the owners representative. The owner should periodically I 502 Main Street • Suite A3 •Carbondale, CO 81623 • (970) 704-0311 •Fax (970) 704-0313 SIPRIS ENGINEERING llC civil consultants· 07/21/2005 14:18 970-704-0313 SCFRIS ENGit£ERING PAGE 02 Rob Parrington SE Job No. 24063.02 July 21, 2005 Page 2 in5pcct the OWS and to pedonn periodic maintenance which includes pumping the tank and cleaning the filter as nca:ssary to ensure that the system is in good operating condition and performing as intended. The OWS should require minimal maintenance. Several factors influencing the need for maintenance include: actual wastewater flows versus design flows, the volume ofkltdleD/domestic waste (excluding human waste and toilet paper), excessive household chemicals and other toxic liquids (including M>me washilli detergents, i.e. Tia Ultra). The tank, sanitary tees and emuent filter should be visually inspected bi-annually for clogging debris, damage, leiks, or other potential problems. In general, for a properly utilized system, septic tanks should be pumped and inspected evezy 2 -4 years. The effluent filter should be cleaned every six monthll and at the time of pumping. Absorption fields should be maintained with suitable vegetative cover and kept free of root invasive plants. Positive surface drainage away from the absorption field should be maintained.
