Inspection of shop fabrication or field work at job site: Field
Report: Visually inspected field welding at LVL connection plates to columns,
field welding where column bases had to be adjusted & bases were welded directly
to steel beams in lieu of bolting, inspected high strength A325 bolting at steel
beam & column connections, and verified nuts/washers were installed at column
bases. Field welding & bolting inspected above was at the main & upper floor
framing areas grids A to F.
The onsite welding & bolting inspected above appeared to be in substantial
conformance with the plans, and the quality requirements of the AWS D1.1
Structural Welding Code & the AISC/RCSC Specification for high strength
bolting except as noted below.
1) Bases of steel columns supporting the roof framing had to be adjusted &
subsequently the bolt holes did not align, so the base plates of columns were
welded directly to tops of the upper floor level steel beams in lieu of bolting. The
special inspector is not suppose to approve changes from bolting to welding or
visa versa. BJ Schmidt the job site supervisor with Doug Hayes Construction was
going to verify with the Structural Engineer that this was acceptable.
Further inspections will need to be performed as work progresses on the project.
