RE: Wooden Deer Residence, Garfield Gounty, CO
Dear Brad:
Per your request, I visited the Wooden Deer Project to review the comments from
the Building Department site observation. Following are my comments.
Item 1: The (31 14 Microlam Roof Beam over the Caretaker Unit, was beveled on
the lower edge to match the ceiling pitch. The shaved depth of the '14" Microlam is
13 yz" for each member of the (3) ply beam and is acceptable as framed.
Item 2: The double top plate of the stud wall in the west Kitchen was interrupted by
a steel column. A Simpson MSTC4O strap shall be installed on the exterior face of
the wall.
Item 3: A smallwire hole was drilled within the 6" bearing zone forthe 16" TJI rafters
at24" on center at the high roof over the Entry. The span for these rafters is only 6'-
0" due to the location of the skylight so will be acceptable as framed.
Item 4: A few prefabricated trusses were modified at the bearing to attach to the
cantilever Entry beam. A repair detail shall be given by the Engineer of Record for
the truss manufacturer.
Item 5: A hole was drilled in the stud pack in the comer of the Ëntry wall. A Simpson
HSS stud shoe shall be installed for reinforcing.
Item 6: A few 16" Microlam deck joists at the Caretaker Deck had (3) holes drilled
too close together in the horizontal direction. The holes are within the allowable
center third vertical area. Due to the oversized Microlam size to match the floor truss
height, these joist holes are acceptable,
Item 7: A series oJ 1ô" Microlam deck joists at the Living Room Deck were drilled too
close to the bottom of the joist. A Simpson LSA15 strap shall be installed on the
bottom of the joists eæntered on the drilled hole above.
Item 8: A steel column in the crawl space was modified to replace steel boot
connections each side with (3) 2x6 stud packs installed for each boot. This is
acceptable.
Item 9: The wood crawl space beam located at the 2'-6" thic* footing was modified to
hang from the side of the footing by bearing on a double 2x P.T. post that was
attached w¡th (2) 7¿" diameter expansion bolts. This will be acceptable.
Please callif have questions.
