Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Design
2-Bedroom Main House + 2-Bedroom ADU
110 Weeping Willow Lane
Garfield County, Colorado
Karla,
ALL SERVICE septic, LLC has completed an onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) design for the
subject residence. The 12.808-acre property is located outside of Carbondale, in an area where OWTSs
are necessary.
Legal Description: Section: 36 Township: 7 Range: BB Subdivision: ROARING FORK PRESERVE Lot: 7
AMENDED LOT 7 AS PER RECEPTION #878510
Parcel lD: 2393-363-19-007
SITE CONDITIONS
A 2-bedroom, single-family residence presently exists on the property and is being served by an existing
OWTS documented by lndividual Sewage Disposal Permit 4297. There is a desire to convert space in
an existing barn into an additional dwelling unit (ADU). The existing septic tank will be replaced as there
is currently a breach in the septic tank allowing groundwater to enter during times of irrigation. The
existing mounded soil treatment area (STA) will be renovated to address the minimum height
requirements and square footage to accommodate 4 total bedrooms.
The residence and barn are currently served by an existing well that is located greater than SO-feet from
the proposed septic tank and greater than 1O0-feet from the proposed STA.
There are multiple ditches on the property. A minor ditch, not located on the site plan, runs to the south
of the existing and proposed STA. This ditch must be abandoned and within SOJeet of the STA. We
also discourage the practice of flood irrigation in the field upgradient of the STA.
The proposed mounded STA will be located in the same approximate location as the existing mounded
STA.
SUBSURFACE
With the proposed STA to mirror the existing, mounded STA, no additional subsurface investigation was
conducted. The existing mound consists of 4-feet of sand filter material above existing grade. A minimum of
3-feet of sand filter material is required if groundwater is estimated at grade. The existing A-feet will be
maintained and extended to the new parameters of the mound.
Page2
Existing mound View of existing mound
STA sizing is based on a mounded, unlined sand filter with a minimum of 3-feet of sand filter material. A
long term acceptance rate (LTAR) of 1.0 gallons per square foot will be used to design the OWTS,
in accordance with Table 10-1 presented in the Garfield County On-Site Wastewater Treatment
System Regulations, adopted April 14, 2014.
DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
Desiqn Calculations:
Average Design Flow = 75 GPD x 2 people/bedroom x 4 Bedrooms = 600 GPD
LTAR = 1.0 GPD/SF
600 GPD / 1.0 GPD/SF = 600 SF
Proposed footprint = 9' x 67'
The OWTS design is based on 4-bedrooms (2-bedrooms in each residence). An average daily
wastewater flow of 600 GPD will be used.
The existing septic tank will be properly abandoned by pumping and filling with on-site soils. A new
1S0O-gallon, two-compartment septic tank will be installed.
A double-sweep clean out should be installed on the existing sewer line existing the main residence. The
2-inch diameter pump line from the Barn/ADU must enter the sewer line between the main residence and
the new septic tank at a high point. By entering the sewer line, it will help to disperse energy from the
pump and minimize turbulence in the septic tank.
The system installation will include a new 150O-gallon, two-compartment Valley Precast concrete septic
tank with an Orenco@ Biotube Pump Vault and an Orenco@ PF5005 pump in the second compartment of
the septic tank. The septic tank must be anchored with Deadmen because of the high seasonal
groundwater table. The floats should be set to dose approximately 80 gallons each pump cycle (allowing
approximately 5 gallons for drain back). The control panel for the pump must be located within line of sight
of the septic tank. We recommend Valley Precast out of Buena Vista be contracted for start-up of the
pumping system.
Effluent will be pressure dosed through a 1.5-inch diameter pump line to a mounded, 9' x 67' unlined,
mounded sand fllter. The pump line must have a minimum 1% slope for drain back into the septic tank after
each pump cycle. We recommend the trench be well bedded with road base or sand and covered with Blue
Board insulation for protection for settling and freezing.
Page 3
The existing footprint of the mound will be modified and height may be reduced from 4-feet to 3-feet. A
minimum of 3-feet of sand filter material will be installed in the new mound footprint. Existing sand filter
material may be utilized, if absent of biomat. New sand filter material must be clean, coarse sand, all
passing a screen having four meshes to the inch. The sand must have an effective size between 0.25 and
0.60 mm. The uniformity coefficient must be 4.0 or less. Material meeting ASTM 33, for concrete sand, with
one percent or less fines passing 200 mesh sieve may be used.
The existing chambers on the mound will be removed and replaced with a pipe and gravel distribution
system. Laterals used to disperse the effluent must be surrounded by washed coarse screened gravel or
crushed stone. All of the gravel or stone must pass a 2 tí-inch screen and must be retained on a u/¿-inch
screen. The manifold must be 1 .S-inches in diameter. Laterals must be 1 .5-inches in diameter with 5/32-
inch diameter orifices facing down, spaced 3-feet on center. We recommend Orenco@ Orifice Shields be
installed on the laterals at each orifice. Laterals will begin 3-feet from the edges of the filter, with 3-feet
between each lateral. Each 1.5-inch diameter lateral must end in a sweeping ell facing up with a ball
valve for flushing. A soil separation fabric should be placed over the gravel layer followed by approxímately
1-foot of topsoil or other suitable soil able to support vegetative growth.
The mound must have a minimum 3:1 slope (horizontal:vertical); therefore, the basal area will extend
approximately 1S-feet beyond the sand filter on all sides (with a total mound height of 5-feet above native
grade). Soils in the sloped perimeter areas of the mound must be well draining and able to suppott
vegetative growth. This soil must be approved by this office prior to installation. The mound must be
crowned in a manner to promote drainage off of the STA.
The component manufacturers are typical of applications used by contractors and engineers in this area.
Alternatives may be considered or recommended by contacting our office. Construction must be
according to Garfield County On-Site Wastewater Treatment System Regulations, the OWTS Permit
provided by Garfield County Building Department, and this design.
REVEGETATION REQUIREMENTS
An adequate layer of good quality topsoil capable of supporting revegetation shall be placed over the entire
disturbed area of the OWTS installation. A mixture of native grass seed that has good soil stabilizing
characteristics (but without taproots), provides a maximum transpiration rate, and competes well with
successional species. No trees or shrubs, or any vegetation requiring regular irritation shall be placed over
the STA. Until vegetation is reestablished, erosion and sediment control measures shall be implemented
and maintained on site. The owner of the OWTS shall be responsible for maintaining proper vegetation
cover.
OPERATION INFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE
The properly owner shall be responsible for the operation and maintenance of each OWTS servicing the
properly. The property owner is responsible for maintaining service contracts for manufactured units,
alternating STAs, and any other components needing maintenance.
Geo-fabrics or plastics should not be used over the STA. No heavy equipment, machinery, or materials
should be placed on backfilled STAs. Livestock should not graze on the STA. Plumbing fixtures should be
checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWTS. For example, a running toilet or
leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a STA.
lf an effluent filter or screen has been installed in the OWTS, we recommend this filter or screen be cleaned
annually, or as needed. lf the OWTS consists of a pressurized pump system, we recommend the laterals be
flushed annually, or as needed.
Page 4
The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years, or as needed gauged by measurement of
solids in the tank. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non-biodegradable materials should not
be placed into the OWTS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener
should not be discharged into the OWTS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWTS.
Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWTS. The OWTS is engineered for domestic waste
only.
ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES
lf design includes a pump, weep holes must be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of
freezing. The pump shall have an audible and visual alarm notification in the event of excessively high
water conditions and shall be connected to a control breaker separate from the high water alarm breaker
and from any other control system circuits. The pump system shall have a switch so the pump can be
manually operated.
Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of the STA due to the potential to compact soil
Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade
Backfill over the STA must be uniform and granular with no material greater than minus 3-inch.
INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS
ALL SERVICE septic, LLC must view the OWTS during construction. The OWTS observation should be
performed before backfill, after placement of OWTS components. Septic tanks, distribution devices,
pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. ALL SERVICE septic,
LLC should be notified 48 hours in advance to observe the installation.
LIMITS:
The design is based on information submitted. lf soil conditions encountered are different from conditions
described in report, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. All OWTS construction must be
according to the county regulations. Requirements not specified in this report must follow applicable
county regulations. The contractor should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the
requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. Licensing of Systems Contractors
may be required by county regulation.
Please call with questions
Sincerely,
ALL SERVICE septic, LLC

Using a Pump Curve
A putrtp curue helps you determine the best pump for your systern. Pump curves show the relationship between flow (gpm or Usec) and pressure
(total dynarnic head, orTDH), providing a graphical representation of a pump's optimal performance range. Pumps perform best at their norninal
flow rate - the value, measured ln gpm, expressed by the first two nurnerals in an 0renco purnp nomenclature. The graphs ln this section shor,v
optirnal pump operation ranges with a solid line. Flow flow rates outside of these ranges are shown with a dashed line. For the nlost accurate
pump specification, use 0renco's PumpSelect'" software.
