Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Design
3-Bedroom Residence + Future 3-Bedroom ADU
2331 CR 100
Garfield County, Colorado
Nona,
ALL SERVICE septic, LLC has completed an onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) design for the
subject residence. The 4.01-acre property is located outside of Carbondale, in an area where OWTSs
and wells are necessary. Landscaping plans have been developed which necessitated moving the
proposed septic tank that will serve the main house and garage. Original design documents September
15,2017 should be discarded and replaced with these dated March 19,2018.
Legal Description: Section: 36 Township: 7 Range: 88 A PARCEL OF LAND SITUATED lN
GOVERNMENT LOT 17. AKA LOT 2 OF THE COFFMAN RANCH SUB-DIV EXEMPTION NORTH
PARCEL PLAT.
Parcel lD: 2393-364-00-27 1
SITE CONDITIONS
A 3-bedroom, single-family residence is presently developed on the property. A garage wilh Tz bath is
proposed. A 3-bedroom detached additional dwelling unit (ADU) is also proposed. The existing OWTS
serving the existing residence is located in an area that will be re-developed for the proposed garage and
driveway. New soil treatment areas (STAs) to serve the existing residence, garage, and the proposed
ADU will be located in the southeast corner of the property, paralleling the eastern property line and
driveway.
There is a shared well located on the adjacent property to the east. The well is located at least 1O0-feet
from the proposed STAs and at least S0-feet from the proposed septic tanks. There must be a minimum
25-foot setback from the waterline to any OWTS component, and a minimum 50-foot setback from the
ditch to the STAs.
The proposed location of the STAs is relatively flat and is vegetated with native grasses
SUBSURFACE
Timberline Engineering's previous design dated May 18,2009 documents a percolation rate of I minutes
per inch and groundwater at approximately 4-feet below grade. Using this information, we assume the
base soils are Soil Type 1, Sand to Loamy Sand.
We are proposing a mounded sand filter extending 2-feet above the native Soil Type 1 soils. A long{erm
acceptance rate of 1.0 gallons/square foot will be utilized for the unlined sand filter. With 2-feet of sand filter
material above native grade, high seasonal groundwater is assumed not to exceed 1-foot below grade.
Page2
Prior to construct¡on of the mounded sand f¡lter, a soil profile test p¡t must be excavated in the area
of the STAs to veriff assumptions used in this design are correct. This office must be contacted to
perform these verifications. lf assumptions regarding soil type or depth to groundwater are found to
be incorrect, modifications must be made to the design.
DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
The existing septic tank will be removed and the existing STA will be excavated in the area of the new
garage, or abandoned in place where development is not occurring.
The new OWTSs for the Main House and ADU are both covered in this design, although construction of
the ADU will occur at a later date. Both STAs will be constructed at this time in order to complete
landscaping on the property. The septic tank serving the ADU will not be installed until the ADU is
constructed.
Desion Calculations:
Average Design Flow = 75 GPD x 2 people/bedroom x 3 Bedrooms = 450 GPD
LTAR = 1.0 GPD/SF
450 GPD / 1.0 GPD/SF = 450 SF
Main House
The new OWTS design is based on 3-bedrooms. The toilet and sink in the garage are an auxiliary use to
the main house. An average daily wastewater flow of 450 GPD will be used. The system installation will
include a new 1250-gallon, two-compartment concrete septic tank with an Orenco@ Biotube Pump Vault
and an Orenco@ PF3005 pump in the second compartment of the septic tank. We recommend anchoring
the septic tank with Deadmen because of the high seasonal groundwater table. The floats should be set to
dose approximately 100 gallons each pump cycle (allowing approximately 25-30 gallons of drain back after
each pump cycle). The control panel for the pump must be located within line of sight of the septic tank. We
recommend Valley Precast out of Buena Vista be contracted for start-up of the pumping system.
Effluentwill be pressure dosed through a 1.S-inch diameter pump line to a mounded, 10'x 45' unlined sand
filter. The excavation for the sand filter will begin at approximate native grade. Vegetation should be
scraped from the base of the mound. A minimum of 2-feet of sand filter material will be installed in the
mound footprint. Sand filter material must be clean, coarse sand, all passing a screen having four meshes to
the inch. The sand must have an effective size between 0.25 and 0.60 mm. The uniformity coefflcient must
be 4.0 or less. Material meeting ASTM 33, for concrete sand, with one percent or less fines passing 200
mesh sieve may be used.
Laterals used to disperse the effluent must be surrounded by washed coarse screened gravel or crushed
stone. All of the gravel or stone must pass a2Yz-inch screen and must be retained on a%¿-inch screen. The
manifold must be 1.S-inches in diameter. Laterals must be 1.S-inches in diameter with 5/32-inch diameter
orifices facing down, spaced 3-feet on center. We recommend Orenco@ Orifice Shields be installed on the
laterals at each orifice. Laterals will begin 3-feet from the edges of the filter, with Z-feet between each lateral.
Each 1.S-inch diameter lateral must end in a sweeping ell facing up with a ball valve for flushing. A soil
separation fabric should be placed over the gravel layer followed by approximately 1-foot of topsoil or other
suitable soil able to support vegetative growth.
The mound must have a minimum 3:1 slope (horizontal:vertical); therefore, the basal area will extend
approximately 9-feet beyond the sand filter on all sides (with a total mound height of 3-feet above native
grade). Soils in the sloped perimeter areas of the mound must be well draining and able to surpport
vegetative growth. This soil must be approved by this office prior to installation. The mound must be
crowned in a manner to promote drainage off of the STA.
Page 3
ADU (FUTURE) A/OIE: Only the STA for the ADU will be constructed at this time. The septic tank and
pump line will be installed at time of construction of the ADU.
The new OWTS design is based on 3-bedrooms. An average daily wastewater flow of 450 GPD will be
used. The system installation will include a new 125O-gallon, two-compartment concrete septic tank with
an Orenco@ Biotube Pump Vault and an Orenco@ PF3005 pump in the second compartment of the septic
tank. We recommend anchoring the septic tank with Deadmen because of the high seasonal groundwater
table. The floats should be set to dose approximately 90 gallons each pump cycle (allowing for
approximately 10 gallons of drain back into the septic tank after each pump cycle). The control panel for the
pump must be located within line of sight of the septic tank. We recommend Valley Precast out of Buena
Vista be contracted for start-up of the pumping system.
Effluent will be pressure dosed through a 1.5-inch diameter pump line to a mounded, 10' x 45' unlined sand
filter. The excavation for the sand filter will begin at approximate native grade. Vegetation should be
scraped from the base of the mound. A minimum of 2-feet of sand filter material will be installed in the
mound footprint. Sand filter material murst be clean, coarse sand, all passing a screen having four meshes to
the inch. The sand must have an effective size between 0.25 and 0.60 mm. The uniformity coefficient must
be 4.0 or less. Material meeting ASTM 33, for concrete sand, with one percent or less fines passing 200
mesh sieve may be used.
Laterals used to disperse the effluent must be surrounded by washed coarse screened gravel or crushed
stone. All of the gravel or stone must pass a2lr-inch screen and must be retained on aT¿-inch screen. The
manifold must be 1.5-inches in diameter. Laterals must be 1.S-inches in diameter with 5/32-inch diameter
orifices facing down, spaced 3-feet on center. We recommend Orenco@ Orifice Shields be installed on the
laterals at each orifice. Laterals will begin 3-feet from the edges of the filter, with 2-feet between each lateral.
Each 1.S-inch diameter lateral must end in a sweeping ell facing up with a ball valve for flushing. A soil
separation fabric should be placed overthe gravel layer followed by approximately 1-foot of topsoilor other
suitable soil able to support vegetative growth.
The mound must have a minimum 3:1 slope (horizontal:vertical); therefore, the basal area will extend
approximately 9-feet beyond the sand filter on all sides (with a total mound height of 3-feet above native
grade). Soils in the sloped perimeter areas of the mound must be well draining and able to support
vegetative growth. This soil must be approved by this office prior to installation. The mound must be
crowned in a manner to promote drainage off of the STA.
The component manufacturers are typical of applications used by contractors and engineers in this area.
Alternatives 'may be considered or recommended by contacting our office. Construction must be
according to Garfield County On-Site Wastewater Treatment System Regulations, the OWTS Permit
provided by Garfield County Building Department, and this design.
REVEGETATION REQUIREMENTS
An adequate layer of good quality topsoil capable of supporting revegetation shall be placed over the entire
disturbed area of the OWTS installation. A mixture of native grass seed that has good soil stabilizing
characteristics (but without taproots), provides a maximum transpiration rate, and competes well with
successional species. No trees or shrubs, or any vegetation requiring regular irritation shall be placed over
the STA. Until vegetation is reestablished, erosion and sediment control measures shall be implemented
and maintained on site. The owner of the OWTS shall be responsible for maintaining proper vegetation
cover.
Page 4
OPERATION INFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE
The property owner shall be responsible for the operation and maintenance of each OWTS servicing the
property. The propefi owner is responsible for maintaining service contracts for manufactured units,
alternating STAs, and any other components needing maintenance.
Geo-fabrics or plastics should not be used over the STA. No heavy equipment, machinery, or materials
should be placed on backfilled STAs. Livestock should not graze on the STA. Plumbing fixtures should be
checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWTS. For example, a running toilet or
leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a STA.
lf an effluent filter or screen has been installed in the OWTS, we recommend this filter or screen be cleaned
annually, or as needed. lf the OWTS consists of a pressurized pump system, we recommend the laterals be
flushed annually, or as needed.
The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years, or as needed gauged by measurement of
solids in the tank. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non-biodegradable materials should not
be placed into the OWTS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener
should not be discharged into the OWTS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWTS.
Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWTS. The OWTS is engineered for domestic waste
only.
ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES
lf design includes a pump, weep holes must be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of
freezing. The pump shall have an audible and visual alarm notification in the event of excessively high
water conditions and shall be connected to a control breaker separate from the high water alarm breaker
and from any other control system circuits. The pump system shall have a switch so the pump can be
manually operated.
Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of the STA due to the potential to compact soil.
Efensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade.
Backfill over the STA must be uniform and granular with no material greater than minus 3-inch.
INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS
ALL SERVICE septic, LLC must view the OWTS during construction. The OWTS observation should be
performed before backfill, after placement of OWTS components. Septic tanks, distribution devices,
pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. ALL SERVICE septic,
LLC should be notified 48 hours in advance to observe the installation.
LIMITS:
The design is based on information submitted. lf soil conditions encountered are different from conditions
described in report, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. All OWTS construction must be
according to the county regulations. Requirements not specified in this report must follow applicable
county regulations. The contractor should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the
requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. Licensing of Systems Contractors
may be required by county regulation.

Using a Pump Gu¡ve
A pump carue helps you determine the best pump for your system. Pump curves show the relationship between flow (gpm or Usec) and pressure
(total dynamic head, or TDH), providing a graphical representation of a pump's optimal performance range, Pumps perform best at their nominal
flow rate - the value, measured in gpm, expressed by the first two numerals in an Orenco pump nomenclature. The graphs in this section show
optimal pump operation ranges with a solid line. Flow flow rates outside of these ranges are shown with a dashed line. For the most accurate
pump specification, use Orenco's PumpSelect'" software.
