Mr. Provost,
The purpose of this letter is to address the construction of the boulder retaining walls bordering the
driveway at at Lot 5 Callicotte Ranch. The walls were constructed using on-site excavated basaltic
angular rock as anticipated, but at heights which exceed design at heights up to 7 -feet. Upon
observation of the post construction, it appears that the boulder selection and placement was well
thought out. The swale above the wall was too shallow though at a depth of only 4"-9" and the berming
used to create the swale was not compacted on the downhill side. As engineer of record, I am willing to
accept the excessive height under the following conditions:
1) No trees be installed atop the wall system or inside the tiers of the walls.
2) No irrigation be installed or used above the walls on the uphill side of the roadway. The only
vegetation permitted above the walls and inside the tiers is dryland native grass and non-
irrigated brush (sagebrush, rabbitbrush, or similar).
3) The drainage swale above the uphill walls must be fully constructed by cutting a 12" deep swale
with 2:1 side slopes and moistening/compacting the spoils along the downhill edge of the swale
using a walk behind vibratory plate. Since the soils are currently frozen, the swale
reconstruction must be completed by May 1, 2019. Boundaries Unlimited Inc. shall be
contacted for a final inspection when the swale construction is complete and to confirm that the
integrity of the walls has been maintained.
