Re: Joist Penetration Review
100 Stagecoach Circle
Carbondale, Colorado 81623
My office has been contacted by Mr. Bailey to provide professional engineering services. The
scope of work for review is indicated as miscellaneous drilled penetrations through framing
members. I visited the site on 7 May 2019 to review existing field conditions.
The members in question are 2x10 floor joists spaced at 16" on center, spanning approximately
12'-0". The joists support a floor above which is understood to not carry concrete or stone
toppings. Therefore, typical residential live and dead loads are applicable for this review. The
three northernmost joists have been impacted. Drilled penetrations observed for review include:
1. 3/4"0 hole, center located 2" above bottom of joist, located approximately 22"
from west end.
2. 3/4"0 hole, center located 2" above bottom of joist, located approximately 28"
from west end.
3. 3 1 /2"0 hole, center located 5 1/2" - 6" below top of joist, located approximately
80" from west end.
The southern two joists have been reinforced with 3/4" plywood each side, beginning near the
west end of the joists and extending approximately 8'-0" east. The northern joist has been
reinforced with 3/4" plywood each side, beginning near the east end of the joist and extending
approximately 8'-0" west. The plywood is fastened to the joist with 3 wood screws at
approximately 12" on center.
Conclusion:
These drilled beam penetrations are structurally acceptable through these reinforced 2x floor
joists as outlined above. Additional penetrations, or conditions that differ from referenced
require additional analysis. Please feel free to contact this office with any questions.
