The evaluation was performed in accordance wirh our agreenrent for professional se¡vices with RM Construction dated May 3,2A18. We previously conducted a subsoil study for design offoundations at the site and plesented our findings in a repCIn dated April 5,2A17, Project No. 17-7-236. The basement floor is proposed to be conventional slab-on-gratle construction. We had recommended in the previous report to sub-excavate the compressible silt and clay soils down 2 feet and teplace thetn compacted to help reduce the settlement potential of the slab mainly if the bearing soils are wetted. Additional testing of the silt ancl clay soils at subgrade level, results presented on Figure I and in Table 1, confinn the compressibility potential of the natural soils. The depth of compressibie soils is around 6 to I feet. Based CIn this depth, we expect at least 1 inch of slab settlement if the subgrade soils are wetted. If the risk of settlement and distress is acceptable, the sub-excavation and compaction can be eliminated. The north part of the basement slab area has already beeu replaced compacted. The remaining subgrade area as a minimum will need to be moistened to near optimum and compacted to at least 95Vo of standard Proctor density. The findings of our observations are presented in this report. The observations were performed in acco¡dance with our agreement for professional services with RM Construction dated May 3, 201 8. The foundation is designed to be supported on forty-eight drilled piers of 24-inch diameter. The pier location plan is shown on Figure 1. our observations of the pier hole drilling are presented in the attached Drilled Pier Observation Reports. The pier holes were observed to have penetrated the alluvial fan deposits and adequately embedded into the underlying river gravel deposit. Due to potential caving of the gravel, the practical driliing limit was 1 to 2 feet into the deposit' but temporary casing was used to limit caving and achieve greater penetration depth. Based on the previous st¡bsurface exploration and our current observations at the site, the installed piers appear adequate to suppof the recommended design values. Some of the pier holes were around one foot or less short of the recommended 10 feet minimum total depth because the river gravel penetration depth far exceeded the minimum specified depth of one foot. The findings submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the pier hole drilling, our experience in the area and the previous subsurface exploration at the site. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the piers could increase the risk of foundation movement. Our services do not include determining the presence, prevention or possibility of mold or other RM Constmction May 31,2018 Page2 biological contaminants (MOBC) developing in the ftiture. ffthe client is concerned about MOBC, then a professional in this special field of practice should be consulted.
