Below please find our comments and proposed actions. A. Egress Windows: Detail 2/A7.1 "Vinyl Window Elevations" identifies window units "G" and "H" as incorporating egress openings. Elevation Sheet A3.1 has been revised to clarify egress openings from the sleeping rooms. A PDF file of this drawing is attached, and copies of that revised sheet will be delivered to your office. 2. Re: Fire Partitions at Corridor Walls and Walls Separating Sleeping Rooms: The existing walls between the corridor and the sleeping rooms and the walls separating sleeping rooms consist of one layer of 1/2" gypsum board on each side of 2x4 wood studs spaced at 16" on center. Per the calculation procedures outlined in IBC 722.6 the time assigned to one layer of GWB is 15 minutes. The time assigned to the wood stud framing is 20 minutes. Therefore this 35 -minute assembly exceeds the 30 -minute assembly rating required by IBC 708.3 Exception 2. The existing doors separating the sleeping rooms from the corridor are 36" wide x 1 3/4" thick solid -core wood doors with 3/4" solid wood jambs. These door assemblies do not appear to have a label identifying them as having a 20 -minute rating. Given that this is an existing building, and that we are installing an NFPA 13 fire sprinkler system throughout, we would propose that the existing doors and frames be left in place with the following modifications: a. Installation of automatic door closers on every door. b. Replacement of existing butt hinges with ball bearing hinges anchored through the jambs to the jamb framing behind. c. Installation of compressible smoke seals at the head and jamb of each door. d. Replacement of all existing knob hardware with lever hardware. Please let me know if this approach is acceptable.
