Re: Carlson Storage Barn Retaining Wall
PAE Project #18012
To Whom It May Concern:
On November 18, 2018, personnel of Pattillo Associates Engineers, Inc., inspected the
contractor -built boulder retaining wall along the north and east sides of the newly
constructed storage barn building on the Carlson Ranch property, located at 2780 County
Road 113 (Cattle Creek Road) in Garfield County, Colorado. At that time, the wall was
being completed by Walters Construction Company and final grading was underway.
The wall is up to approximately six feet in height and was constructed with rounded
granite boulders from 12 to 18 inches in size. The face of the wall was laid-back at about
a 1/2:1 (horizontal to vertical) slope, and the boulders were nested in contact with each
other. Bedding and backfill were comprised of native sandy -clay soils. The lower
course of boulders at the toe of the wall was about half -buried into the compacted lower
grade.
We conclude that the subject boulder wall appeared properly constructed and will likely
suffice to safely retain the soils at this location.
