RIFLE AREA, COLOFIADO 13
and the lower part is brown gravelly sandy loam about 5inches thick. The substratum is sand, cobbles, and
gravel to a depth of 60 inches.
Permeability of the Atencio soil is moderate, and avail_
able water capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 60
inches or more. Surface runoff is slow, and the erosion
hazard is slight.
The Azeltine soil is deep and well drained. Typically, the surface layer is reddish gray gravelly sandy loam
about 8 inches thick. The underlying layer is ieddish
brown gravelly sandy loam about 10 inches thick. The
substratum is calcareous sand, gravel, and cobbles to a
depth of 60 inches or more.
Permeability of the Azeltine soil is moderately rapid,
and wqtgl capacity is very tow. Effective rooting ieptir is
about 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is sloli, and the
erosion hazard is slight.
These soils are used mainly for grazing and crops.
Alfalfa,.small grains, potatoes, and griss-lejume hay are
the main crops.
This soil is irrigated mainly by flooding. Grassed water-
ways and minimum tillage prevent serious erosion. Covercrops or stubble mulching in dryfarmed areas alsoreduce erosion.
The native vegetation on these soils is mainly wheat_grass, sagebrush, and needleandthread.

the map unit.

Suhace runoff is slow, and the erosion hazard is moder-

This soil is used mainly for some irrigated pasture and
hay and for grazing. Small acreages of wheat, barley,
and oats are grown.
fboOing aid sprinklers are suitable for inigating this
soil. This Soil is dioughty and needs frequent irrigation to
mature crops. Contr6tting the rate of water application
reduces piping and erosion.
The native-vegetation on this soil is mainly wheat-
grass, needleandt-hread, and sagebrush'' When range condition deteriorates, forbs and shrubs
