RE: Evidence of soil types and characteristics of each type'
7oc 6185
34--Enpedrado loam, 2 to 5 percenE elopee. This deep,,we1l drained
soil is on H*..f" fans, and upland hills. Included in this unit are small
area's of alluvium and eolian material. Elevation is 5,500 to 9,000 feeE.
The average annual precipitation is l5 to I8 inches, the average annual air
temperature is 40 to 44 degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 75 Eo
95 days.
Typically, the surface layer is brown loan 5 inches thick. The subsoil
is clay loarn 35 inches Ehick. The substratum Eo a depEh of 60 inches or more
' is clay 1oam. The soil is noncalcareous Eo a depth of 38 inches and
calcareous below thaE depth.
Included in this uniE are small areas of sirailar soils with darker,
thicker surface layers. Also included are small areas of similar soils with
silt loam and siLry clay loam textures. Included areas make up abouE 20
percenE of the EotaI acreage.
Permeability of the Empedrado soil is moderate. Available waLer capaciEy
is high. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is nedium,
and Ehe hazard of saEer erosion is slight.
This unit is used for hayland and cropland.
This unit is well suiEed to hay and pasture. Grasses and legumes grow
well if adequate fertilizer is used. rf properry managed, this uni'c can
produce 5 tons of irrigated grass hay per acre.
/trz
3"1-'
The potential plant coumuniEy on this unit is mainly ri'estern wheatgrass,
needleandthread, prairie junegrass, mountain big sagebrush, and Douglas
rabbitbrush. 0Eher less nunerous plants that characterize this site are
truEEongrass, Letteruan needlegrass, courmon snowberry, UEah serviceberry, and
antelope bitterbrush. The average annual producEion of air-dry vegetaEion is
about 1,500 pounds per acre. If Ehe range condiLion deterioraEes, mountain
big sagebrush, Kentucky bluegrass, Douglas rabbitbrush, and annual weeds
increase.
This unit is well suited Eo alfalfa and small grains crops. It has few
limitations. Maintaining crop residue on or near the surface reduces runoff,
reduces soil b1owing., and helps Eo maintain soil tiIEh and organic matter
content. If properly rnanaged, this unit can produce 90 bushels of barely per
acre.
This map unit is suited to homesite development. Shrink-swe11 poEential
can be uinimized by thoroughly preweEting foundaEion areas. The limitacions
of moderate permabitity can be overcotre by increasing the size of the
absoption field.
This map unit is in capability subclasses IVe, irrigated, and IVe,
nonirrigated. It is in Ehe Deep Loam range site.

3s--hpedrado loffi, 6 to 12 perqenc slopes. This deep, well drained
tr,p L X0Jsoil is on €€rraees\ fans. analf,iffs. It formed in allwitm and eolian\'/\
materials. Elevation is 6,500 to 9,000 feet. The average annual
precipitation is about 1 5 to 1 8 inches, the average annual air tenrperature
is 40 to 44 degrees F, and the average frost-free season is 75 to 95 days.
Tlpically, the surface layer is brovm loan 5 inches thick. the subsoil
is clay loam about 35 inches thick. The substratrm to a depth of 60 inches
is clay loam, the soil is noncalcareous to a depth of 38 inches and
calcareous belo^r that depth.
Included in this unit are srnall areas of similar soils with darl<er,
thicker surface layers. Also included are gnall areas of similar soils with
silt loam and silty clay loam texrures throughout the profiles. Included
areas make up about 20 percent of the total acreage.
Permeability of the Bnpedrado soil is moderate. Available water
capacity is high. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Rr-u'roff is
medium, and the hazard of water erosion is moderate.
this r:nit is used for hayland and cropla-rd.
This unit is weLI suited ro hay and pastrure. Grasses and legunes grc,(d
well if adequate fertilizer is used. If properly managed, rhis tmit can
produce 4 tons of irrigated grass hay per acre.
this r.unit is r^reIl suited to alfalfa and srnall grain crops. Ic is
liniEed mainly by steeper slopes in scrne areas. T.imicing tillage for
seedbed preparation and weed control reduces ruroff and erosion. A1l
tillage should be on the contour or across the slope. If properly managed,
this unit can produce 75 bushels of barley per acre.
)r--
The potential plant ccmrn-urity on rhis r:nit is mainly wesEerrl vrheaEgrass,
needleandthread, prairie junegrass, mor.mtain big sagebnrsil, and Douglas
rabbitbnrsh.
0ther less ntmerous plants that characLerize this siEe are muttongrass,
LeEterman needlegrass, corlron snovberry, UEah senriceberry, and antelope
bitterbnrsh. The average amrr:al production of air-dry vegeEaEion is about
1 ,500 por.unds per acre. If Ehe range condition deteriorates, moLmtain big
sagebnrsh, KenEucky bluegrass, Douglas rabbitbnrsh, and anrn:al weeds
increase. These plants are dqninant wtren Ehe range is in poor condition;
therefore, grazLng should be managed so thac che desired balance of species
is maintained in the plant ccrnrruniry.
This map unit is suited to hcmesite develoFnent. The main lirnications
are shrink-swell potential ard slope. Srrink-sr,ell potential can be
minimized by pra,ueEting fourdation areas. The steepness of slope is a
concerrr in installing sepLic Eank absorption fields. Absorption lines
should be installed on Ehe contour.
This map unit is in capability subclass IVe, irrigaEed, and IVe,
nonirrigated. It is in the Deep loam range site.
