Subject: Observation of Pier Drilling, Proposed Main Residence, Big Mountain Ranch,
County Road 252, North of Rifle, Garfield County, Colorado
Dear Roger:
As requested, a representative of H-P/Kumar observed the pier drilling at the subject site
between January 24 and 30, 2018 to evaluate the piers for foundation support. The findings of
our observations are presented in this report. A large portion of the design piers were drilled,
and the remaining piers will be drilled at a later time. The services are part of our agreement for
construction observation and testing for the project to Giard Homes dated December 5, 2017.
We previously conducted a preliminary subsoil study at the site and presented our findings in a
report dated November 7, 2016, Project No. 16-7-485, and provided design recommendations for
the drilled piers in a letter dated December 11, 2017, Project No. 16-7-485.01. The initial design
by KRM Consultants consisted of 104, twelve -inch dimeter piers with four No. 5 reinforcement
bars for each pier.
Our observations of the pier drilling for the 87 piers drilled to date as well as reinforcement
placed in the piers prior to concreting are provided on the attached construction activity and
drilled pier observation reports. The pier numbers on the observation reports refer to the pier
locations shown on the attached Figure 1. Some modifications to the pier layout plan dated
January 2, 2018 were made during the drilling including deleting one pier (located north of Pier
No. 34) and adding four piers (Nos 17, 19, 27 and 28).

The piers were installed per our recommendations and per KRM Consultant's design with the
pier location modifications as discussed above. Fresh concrete and compressive strength test
results on two loads of the concrete provided for the piers are being provided under separate
cover, but the testing indicates the concrete has met design strength.
We should observe the remaining pier drilling on a full-time basis to evaluate compliance with
the design. It appears there are about 22 piers to be drilled. We should be provided a revised
plan for the pier design layout when available.

Construction Activities Observed: Penley Drilling drilled 8 piers today; Pier Numbers 1, 2, 5, 4, 3, 9, 6
and 7, see Figure 1 for pier locations. The pier areas were heated
and blanketed overnight.
Equipment in Use: Drill Rig
H-P/Kumar's Site Activities:
All pier holes were 12" in diameter, 20 feet deep and drilled a
minimum of 10' into bedrock. All pier holes were dry and drilled
plumb. See page 2 of 2 for our observation of the pier hole drilling.
All piers received (4) #5 rebar reinforcement. Piers were concreted
same day as drilled and concrete was sampled for compressive
strength testing. Concrete test results will be provided under
separate cover.
Verbal Communication Roger Giard was informed that piers were drilled to proper depths
and well within plumb limits.

Construction Activities Observed:
Penley Drilling drilled 32 piers today in the garage and basement
areas; Pier Numbers 10, 14, 13, 12, 11, 15-41. See Figure 1 for pier
locations. Pier areas were heated and blanketed overnight.

All pier holes were 12" in diameter, 20 feet deep and drilled a
minimum of 10'-14' into bedrock. All pier holes were dry and drilled
plumb. See pages 2-5 for our observation of the pier hole drilling.

Penley Drilling drilled 14 piers today in the basement level; Pier
Numbers 64 -71, 8, 72 -74, 76 and 77. Pier locations shown on
Figure 1. Pier areas were heated and blanketed overnight.
Drill Rig, Pump truck
All pier holes were 12" in diameter, 20 feet deep and drilled a
minimum of 10'-14' into bedrock. All pier holes were dry and drilled
plumb. See pages 2-3 for our observation of the pier hole drilling.
All piers received (4) #5 rebar reinforcement. Piers that were drilled
today and on 01-25-18 and 01-26-18 were concreted today.
Concrete was sampled for compressive strength testing. Concrete
test results will be provided under separate cover.
Roger Giard was informed that piers were drilled to proper depths
and well within plumb limits.
